그의 장례식에서 받은 전화 한 통

그의 관이 아직 방 안에 있을 때 그의 전화가 울렸다. 습관처럼 받았는데, 낯선 여자의 목소리가 자기 돈이 어디 있냐고 물었다.

Daniel died on a Tuesday, between the second cup of coffee and the drive he never finished. The doctors used the word "sudden" so many times that it stopped meaning anything. What I remember is the quiet that came after, the way the house seemed to hold its breath, and the box of his things the hospital handed me in a plastic bag with a drawstring.

His phone was in that bag. It still had a thumbprint smudge on the screen.

I didn't know his passcode. For eleven years of marriage I had never once needed it, which I told myself was a kind of trust and not a kind of blindness. So it sat on the kitchen counter through the worst week of my life, lighting up with notifications I couldn't read, buzzing against the granite like a trapped insect.

On the morning of the funeral, I slipped it into my coat pocket. I don't fully know why. Maybe I wanted a piece of him close, something warm-ish that had lived in his hand. The chapel smelled of lilies and cold stone. People I half-recognized pressed my fingers and told me he was a good man, and I nodded until my neck ached.

Then, during the silence before the service, it rang.

The sound was enormous in that room. Heads turned. Mortified, I fumbled it out and swiped to silence it, and my thumb hit answer instead. I lifted it to my ear out of pure reflex, the way you do when a phone is ringing and your whole body has been trained for forty years to make it stop.

"Finally," a woman said. Annoyed. Familiar with the number. "Where is it, Danny? Rent was due the first. I've covered you for, what, two days now, and the landlord is breathing down my neck."

I stepped into the corridor. My voice came out steadier than I felt. "Who is this?"

A pause. Then, carefully, "Who is *this*?"

"I'm his wife."

The silence that followed told me everything before she did. And then, because cornered people get cruel, she told me the rest anyway. Her name was Carla. There was an apartment across the river, a nice one, with a balcony she'd picked out. He had been paying for it, all of it, for more than a year. She said it like an accusation, like I was the one who'd been keeping something from *her*.

I almost laughed. I had spent that same year refinancing our house, sitting across from a loan officer named Greg while Daniel held my hand and said *we'll get through this, we always do.* We had been three weeks from foreclosure. I had sold my mother's ring. And the whole time there was a balcony across the river.

"He's dead," I told her. "That's why he didn't call. The funeral is happening right now."

She didn't say sorry. She asked, very quietly, what she was supposed to do about the lease.

I hung up. Through the chapel door I could see the casket, the lilies, the rows of people who loved a man I apparently had never fully met. I walked back in and sat down and let the service wash over me, and I grieved two different men that day. The husband I lost on Tuesday. And the stranger who had been wearing his face for years.

Carla never got another check. I made sure of that. But I kept the phone, and sometimes I still feel it buzz that isn't there.
