Mara had not eaten meat in twenty years, and she would tell you so before you asked.

It was not a quiet thing with her. It was a pillar, a flag she planted in every dinner reservation and every argument. Our kitchen was hers by treaty. No chicken stock in the cabinet, no anchovy hidden in a jar of sauce, no shared cutting board that had ever touched flesh. I learned the rules the way you learn the layout of a house in the dark, by bruising myself on them until I knew where everything stood. I did not mind. I loved how certain she was. In a life full of people who changed their minds to match the room, she was the one fixed point.

So the first night it happened, I thought I was dreaming it myself.

It was past three. I surfaced out of sleep to the sound of her voice, low and urgent beside me, the cadence of someone giving instructions. I lay still and listened, expecting nonsense, the usual half-sentences people mutter in the dark. Instead she said, very clearly, to pat it dry first or the skin won't crisp. Then something about not crowding the pan. Then a long, fluent stretch about seasoning under the skin, letting it rest, the smell of it browning.

She was talking about cooking chicken. In detail. With the easy confidence of someone who had done it many times.

I told myself it meant nothing. A documentary she'd half-watched. A memory from childhood, before the twenty years. But the words kept coming back to me over the following weeks, surfacing at odd hours, because they were too specific. You do not narrate a technique you have only ever found disgusting. You do not dream in muscle memory you never built.

I started noticing the small absences. Tuesday evenings she now called her "long studio nights." A new perfume that smelled, faintly, of garlic and something seared. Once, a grease stain on the cuff of a sweater she swore she'd worn nowhere. I did not want to be the man who searched a phone, so I simply asked, gently, where she had been.

The lie came out smooth, then cracked.

It was a man from her office. She had been going to his apartment, she finally admitted, voice flat with exhaustion, and he was teaching her to cook. Real cooking, she said, like she'd been starving for it. Poultry, marinades, the whole forbidden world she had built her identity against. She was learning it for him, in his kitchen, with his hands guiding hers over the pan.

Twenty years of conviction, and she had handed it over to a stranger for the price of feeling new again.

The strangest part was not the affair. It was that her body had confessed before she ever did, rehearsing his recipes in her sleep while the rest of her held the line. Her mouth had been more honest than the woman attached to it.

I packed in the morning. I left the kitchen exactly as she liked it. Spotless, meatless, hers.
