내가 못 찾은 걸 로봇청소기가 찾아냈다

교대 근무 동안 바닥 청소를 맡기려 작은 로봇을 샀다. 어느 오후, 삼키지 못한 무언가에 걸려 갈리는 소리가 났다.

My wife and I worked opposite shifts that year, and the apartment was paying the price for it. Dishes stacked up. Laundry mountained. The floors were a disaster, and neither of us had the energy to fight about whose turn it was. So I did what tired, conflict-avoidant people do in the modern age: I threw money at it. I bought one of those little robot vacuums and set it to run its rounds in the afternoons, while I was out in the garage on a project and Priya was asleep before her night shift.

It was the best forty dollars I ever spent, and the worst.

For a couple of weeks it just did its quiet, dim-witted job, bumping off the baseboards, humming through the rooms, docking itself like a good little machine. Then one afternoon I came in from the garage to grab a drink and heard it in the bedroom — not its usual smooth whir, but a strained, ugly grinding, the sound of a motor fighting something it couldn't win against. It had wedged itself half under the bed, wheels spinning, brush roller seized up.

I flipped it over to clear the jam the way I'd done a dozen times for stray socks and phone chargers.

It wasn't a sock.

Tangled in the brushes, dragged out from somewhere under our bed, was a condom wrapper. And the condom itself.

I knelt there on my own bedroom floor holding a cheap plastic machine, and the math did itself before I could stop it. We hadn't used those. Not me, not us, not in a long while. There was exactly one way that wrapper got under the mattress where Priya slept while I worked nights, and it had nothing to do with me.

A broom would never have found it. A broom goes where you point it, sees nothing, judges nothing, reaches under nothing. But this dumb little robot had no instructions except *clean everywhere,* no sense of which corners of a marriage were supposed to stay dark. It just went where it was programmed to go and dragged the truth out into the light by accident.

I didn't even feel angry at first. I felt strangely calm, almost clinical, standing there with the evidence the machine had so helpfully extracted. I set it down. I waited for Priya to wake up.

When she did, I didn't say a word. I just held it up.

I have never watched a person's face fall apart so fast. There was no story she could build, no innocent version to reach for. She tried "it's not what it looks like," which is genuinely the only thing left to say when it is exactly, precisely, mechanically what it looks like. Then she cried. Then she admitted it — the afternoons, the man, our bed, my side of it sometimes.

She moved out within the month.

People ask why I still keep the thing. I replaced it eventually, sure, but I held onto that first one for a long time, sitting on a shelf in the garage. Not as a trophy. More as a reminder that the truth doesn't care how carefully you hide it. You can keep a secret from a person for months. You cannot keep it from a machine whose only job, all day, every day, is to go under the bed.
