그가 고양이를 구하며 보낸 토요일들

그는 보호소에서 돌아올 때마다 다른 누군가의 집 냄새를 풍겼다. 트렁크 속 사료가 처음으로 앞뒤가 맞지 않았다.

For almost a year, my husband became a better man on Saturdays.

That was the story, anyway. He'd found a small animal rescue out past the highway, the kind of place that's always short on hands, and every Saturday morning he'd kiss the top of my head and disappear for six or seven hours to clean cages and walk dogs and bottle-feed whatever needed feeding. He'd come home tired in that pleasant, righteous way, smelling faintly of bleach and pet dander, and tell me about the senior tabby nobody wanted or the litter someone had left in a box by the door. I loved him a little more for it. I bragged about it to my sister.

The thing about a good lie is that it gives you something to be proud of, so you never think to check it.

What started to bother me was small. He came home one Saturday smelling not of bleach but of vanilla and clean laundry, the specific warm smell of a house that wasn't ours. Another week he had a long pale hair on his sleeve, lighter than mine. He started taking his nice jacket. Who wears a nice jacket to shovel litter?

I told myself I was being paranoid. Then, on a Tuesday, I borrowed his car because mine was at the shop, and I went hunting through the glovebox for sunglasses.

There was a folded packet of paperwork tucked behind the manual. A microchip registration. A vaccination record. A photo, even, printed on glossy paper, of a fluffy gray cat with enormous orange eyes, the kind of fancy designer breed that costs more than my first car. I almost smiled. A surprise, I thought. He's been planning to bring one home.

Then I read the names on the adoption agreement. His. And a woman's I had never heard of. Co-owners. Joint responsibility. There was a little handwritten note clipped to it, a visitation schedule, the cat's weekends split between two addresses like a child of divorce. One of the addresses was forty minutes away, in a part of town I had no reason to ever drive through.

I sat in the cold car in our driveway and understood all of it at once. There was no rescue. There never had been. The bleach smell, I'd find out later, came from a candle she liked. His Saturdays weren't spent saving abandoned animals. They were spent at a second household he'd quietly built, complete with a pet they were raising together, a life laid out so carefully that it had a custody arrangement before I even knew it existed.

The cruelest part wasn't the woman. It was that he'd dressed his betrayal up as kindness, and I had thanked him for it. I had told everyone I knew that my husband spent his weekends doing good.

I put the paperwork back exactly as I'd found it. Then I took the photo of the gray cat, propped it against his coffee mug, and went to wait in the kitchen for Saturday to finally end.
