You marry a man and you take his exhaustion as your own, and so I did. I carried the groceries up three flights while he rested. I scrubbed the bathroom on my knees while he lay in the dim bedroom with the blinds drawn, a cool cloth over his eyes, telling me in a thin voice that even lifting a fork felt like swimming through wet sand.

For eight months I ran the house alone. I worked my full days, then came home to a second shift no one thanked me for. When I asked him to take out the trash, he'd sigh as though I'd asked him to climb a mountain. The guilt always followed. I'd apologize. I'd carry the bin out myself in the dark, hating the small ugly part of me that had begun to wonder.

It was the new phone that undid him. We'd switched plans, linked our accounts, and one afternoon a notification popped up on my screen, an alert from the shared health dashboard he'd set up months earlier so I could "keep an eye on his vitals." I'd never looked. That day, bored on a train, I did.

His resting heart rate was a flat, sleepy line. The line of a man who genuinely barely moved. Except for Tuesdays.

Every Tuesday, between two and three in the afternoon, the graph erupted. A mountain range of red, his heart hammering at the rate of someone sprinting, someone climbing, someone very much not bedridden. Sustained, deliberate, an hour of cardiovascular exertion that ended as abruptly as it began. Then the flat line resumed, the convalescent husband returned, just in time for me to walk through the door at six and find him too weak to set the table.

I scrolled back. Week after week after week. The same red mountain, the same hour, like a heartbeat with a secret. I sat on that train and felt my own pulse climbing to meet the chart, the wet-sand feeling finally arriving in my own chest.

I didn't confront him that night. I let the Tuesday come. I told him I had a late meeting, parked two streets over, and watched him leave our building at one-forty, no cane, no slump, walking with the brisk certainty of a man with somewhere to be. He drove to a stucco apartment across town. A woman opened the door before he knocked.

I stayed in the car the whole hour. I watched the time the chart had taught me to watch. And when he came out, loose and grinning and alive, I understood that the fatigue had been real, just not the kind a doctor could name. He'd been tired of me. The illness was only the costume he wore to be excused from a life he no longer wanted to share.

I drove home before he did. I set the table for one.
