The One Star Review That Knew Too Much

The review went up at 2:14 in the morning, which I only know because I was awake feeding the starter for the sourdough.

One star. I had four-point-eight before that, built over six years of early mornings and burnt forearms and a little corner shop that finally, finally paid for itself. I'd learned not to take the rare bad review personally. People are tired, people are hungry, sometimes the croissants run out by ten. You shrug. You move on.

But I couldn't shrug at this one.

It wasn't about the pastries. It barely mentioned them. It called me "smug" and "cold" and said I "thought I was better than everyone in this town." It said the owner "should pay more attention to her own house than to her little hobby business." Hobby. The word sat in my chest like a stone. Then the last line: "Some people don't deserve what they have."

I read it four times. None of it sounded like a customer. It sounded like someone who knew me. Someone who hated me for reasons that had nothing to do with bread.

The username was a string of letters and numbers, no photo, the account brand new. So I did the thing you do at three in the morning when your hands won't stop shaking. I typed the username into a search bar.

It turned out she'd used it before. The same handle, word for word, on a public Instagram account she clearly thought no one she knew would ever find. And there he was.

My husband. Daniel. In her photos, at her birthday dinner, on a beach I had never been to, tagged in a caption with a heart and a date from a weekend he'd told me he was at a conference in another city. There were dozens. Months of them. A whole second life, smiling, sun-tanned, captioned with inside jokes I would never get to be in on.

I sat on the cold tile of my own kitchen, the starter bubbling beside me, and felt the strangest thing. Not the explosion I'd have expected. A kind of terrible quiet. Everything reorganizing itself. The late meetings. The phone turned face-down. The new gym clothes. The way he'd started calling the bakery "your little thing," exactly the way a stranger had just called it in a public review.

She'd been petty enough to come after me where it would hurt — my work, the one thing that was wholly mine. And in doing it, she'd handed me the whole map.

I didn't wake him. I baked. I let the ovens warm the dark and I opened on time, smiling at the regulars, my four-point-nine still sitting there like nothing in the world had changed. I screenshotted everything. Then I called a lawyer during my lunch break, sitting in the back room that smelled of butter and yeast, and I gave him the first appointment I'd booked for myself in years.

Daniel still has no idea how I found out. Some part of me hopes he asks her. Some part of me hopes she tells him it was the review — that her one cruel little star is the thing that lit the whole house up so I could finally see it burning.
