It was a small question. That is the part I keep coming back to, even now. Not a lie, not a forgotten name, not lipstick or a stray text. Just a question, asked in the soft grey light of a Sunday evening as we drove home from her sister's.
We were stopped at the lights by the train station when she pointed. There was a pub on the corner, the kind with hanging baskets gone leggy and a chalkboard advertising a quiz night nobody attended. "Is that a hotel?" she asked. "Like, does it have rooms upstairs?"
