The kit was supposed to be a hobby. A box on the kitchen counter, a vial of spit, a way to finally pin down which dusty mountain village my grandfather had walked out of before the wars rewrote the maps. Nadia bought it for me as a half-joke birthday gift, the kind of present you give a man who has run out of things to want.

What she didn't know was that I had stopped wanting things months earlier. Somewhere between the late nights she blamed on a "project," the phone that slept face-down like a guilty animal, and the way she flinched when a particular name surfaced in conversation, I had quietly become a man who only wanted one thing. The truth. And I had no idea how to get it without becoming someone I'd despise — a reader of messages, a tracker of cars, a husband crouched in a parking lot at midnight.

So I spat in the vial and mailed away my curiosity, and I waited six weeks for a village.

The name I could not stop circling belonged to a man named Tomasz Vrabec. I had met him exactly twice, both times at gatherings where he stood a little too close to my wife and laughed a little too easily at things that weren't funny. Vrabec. I had never encountered that surname anywhere else in my life. Not in a phone book, not in a film credit, not on a single envelope. It was the kind of name that lodges in you because it has nowhere else to live.

The email arrived on an ordinary Tuesday. Subject line: your paternal line results are ready. I made coffee first, because I wanted one untainted moment. Then I opened the page.

The database that mapped my direct fathers — the unbroken thread of men reaching back through centuries — had returned only a tiny handful of matches. Not the sprawling list I'd imagined. Just a few faint cousins scattered across the world, fragments of a quiet bloodline.

And one of them carried the surname Vrabec.

I sat very still. I refreshed the page, as though the cruelty might rinse itself away. It didn't. The science doesn't flinch the way I did. There was no ambiguity in it, no room for me to talk myself back into peace. A vanishingly rare name had crossed into my own paternal record — the one place a wife's affair was never supposed to be able to reach.

I thought of the test as a search for where I came from. Instead it told me, with the cold patience of a machine, exactly what had been growing inside my own house. Not a village in the mountains. A man in my living room, laughing too easily, woven now into the very chart that was meant to hold only my ancestors.

I never confronted her with a screenshot. I never raised my voice. I simply printed the page, folded it once, and left it on the kitchen counter where the kit had been — a hobby that had wandered, somehow, into the truth.
