Полуночный секрет духовки

В 2 часа ночи телефон пискнул: «Духовка разогрета до 350°F». Мой муж не умеет готовить. Я проверила камеру.

Полный текст истории ниже — на английском.

I was 120 miles away, half-asleep in a hotel bed, when my phone lit up with a notification from our kitchen. “IntelliHeat: Oven has reached preheat temperature of 350°F.” I blinked at the screen, the blue glow harsh in the dark room. Mark couldn't cook. He'd burn water. The only thing he'd ever made from scratch was a bowl of cereal. So why was the oven on at 2:00 AM?

I scrolled through the app, checking the history. Preheated at 1:58 AM. Set to 350°. The timer was running: 14 minutes remaining. Maybe he'd finally decided to try baking those frozen pizzas I kept in the freezer? But Mark never used the oven. He was a microwave man. A sudden unease coiled in my chest.

I switched to our security camera app. The living room camera was offline—maybe a glitch. But the kitchen camera was live. I tapped the feed, and the image loaded in grainy black and white. The island lights were on. Two figures stood next to each other, their backs to the camera. One was clearly Mark, in his gray sweatpants and a T-shirt. The other was a woman. She laughed, something shiny in her hand—a spatula? Mark leaned into her, his arm draped over her shoulder.

My fingers went numb. I zoomed in, but the resolution was too low to make out details. I didn't need to. I knew the curve of her hip, the way she tossed her hair. It was Jill, his coworker from marketing. The one he'd been working late with on “the Hayes project.” The one whose name popped up in his texts at odd hours.

I was out of bed and into my clothes in under a minute. I grabbed my keys, wallet, and phone, and left the conference hotel without checking out. The drive was three hours of white-knuckle fury. Every red light was a personal insult. I replayed the feed in my mind, trying to find an innocent explanation. Maybe they were just friends. Maybe Jill had forgotten something at our house. Maybe Mark had decided to surprise me with homemade pizza when I got back. But even as I thought it, I knew it was nonsense. The oven preheat at 2 AM was a confession.

I pulled into our driveway at 4:47 AM. The kitchen light was still on, a warm rectangle against the dark house. I used my key, careful to be quiet. The smell of pepperoni and melted cheese hit me before I saw them. They were sitting at the island, two paper plates with crusts, a half-empty bottle of red wine between them. Jill saw me first. Her face went pale, wine glass frozen halfway to her lips.

Mark turned, and his expression cycled through surprise, guilt, and a flash of something like anger. “Hey,” he said, as if I'd just walked into a normal evening. “I thought you were in Chicago.”

“I was. But our oven texted me.” I held up my phone. “It told me you were preheating at 2 AM. And since you can't even boil pasta, I figured something was wrong.”

Jill set down her glass and stood, smoothing her blouse. “I should go. Mark, I'm sorry. This was a mistake.” She grabbed her purse from the counter and slid past me, head down, out the door.

We stood in the sudden silence, the only sound the hum of the refrigerator. The oven beeped, a faint reminder that it had finished its job.

“I can explain,” Mark said, but I shook my head.

“You don't have to. The oven explained everything.” I turned and walked out, back into the dawn-chilled air. I sat in my car, engine running, staring at the glowing kitchen window. The smart oven had done what I couldn't: it told the truth at 2 AM. And now, everything that was warm between us had already cooled.
