Трофеи, добытые в рабочее время

Он клялся, что отрабатывает двойную смену в больнице. Маленькое светящееся уведомление на семейном телевизоре говорило другое.

Полный текст истории ниже — на английском.

Daniel was a nurse, and nurses get called in. That was the rhythm of our marriage, and for nine years I never questioned it. A text would land at six in the morning, short staffed, can you cover, and he would kiss the top of my head, grab the protein bar I left by the door, and disappear into a twelve or fourteen hour shift. I was proud of him for it. I told people my husband saved lives while theirs sat on the couch.

That Saturday started the same way. The unit was slammed, he said, two callouts, a possible double. He might not be home until midnight. I told him to drink water and not skip lunch, the way I always did. Then I took our son Eli to his swim lesson, ran the grocery list, and settled into the kind of slow, ordinary afternoon that I now understand I will never be able to remember innocently again.

Eli wanted to play his racing game when we got home. I turned on the console, and while it loaded, the screen did the thing it always does, scrolling through recent activity from Daniel's profile, because his account was the primary one. I wasn't looking for anything. I want that to be clear, even now. I was just waiting for the menu.

And there it was. A small banner, cheerful and gold. Trophy unlocked. Two o'clock that afternoon.

I almost scrolled past it. Then I read the name of the game. It wasn't one of his usual war shooters. It was one of those gentle two player puzzle games, the kind you can only beat if both people cooperate, each holding half of the controls, talking the whole way through. A game built for couples on a couch. I knew the title because a friend had once gushed about playing it with her boyfriend on a rainy weekend.

I sat very still on the floor of my own living room. My husband was at the hospital. My husband was saving lives. My husband had, at two in the afternoon, while I was bagging groceries, unlocked an achievement that specifically required a second player sitting beside him.

I opened the full activity log. Three trophies, all from that same game, all earned that day. One at 1:48. One at 2:11. One at 2:40. Nearly an hour of cooperative play, the two of them solving little rooms together, probably laughing, probably leaning into each other the way you do when you are stuck on a level. Not one of those moments belonged to me.

I did the math the way you check a wound you already know is bad. You cannot play that game alone. The mechanic forbids it. Someone had been holding the second controller. Someone had been in a room across town, on a couch I had never seen, doing the small tender thing I thought was ours.

I didn't call him. I didn't text. I made Eli dinner, listened to him narrate his swim lesson stroke by stroke, and tucked him in with two stories instead of one. Then I sat at the kitchen table in the dark and waited.

Daniel came home at 11:40, smelling of nothing. Not antiseptic, not hospital coffee, not the sour exhaustion of a real fourteen hour shift. Just a faint, unfamiliar perfume he probably thought had faded. He told me the unit had been a nightmare. He told me he was wiped. He said he could really use a quiet weekend, just the three of us.

I asked him how the game was going. He blinked and asked which game. I told him the title, the gold one, the one for two people. I watched the color drain out of his face in real time, and I understood that I was watching a man decide which lie to reach for and finding that all of them had already been taken.

He never even knew the console announces him. All those hours he spent covering his tracks, deleting his browser history, clearing his messages, and the betrayal was sitting on our family television the whole time, glittering, time stamped, cheerful as a birthday.

We are not together anymore. Eli is fine, or as fine as a kid can be. People always ask what gave it away, expecting a lipstick stain or a hotel receipt, and they look almost disappointed when I tell them the truth.

A little gold trophy. Earned at two o'clock, in a game you cannot win by yourself.
