The turkey had been in since six, and by nine the whole house smelled like sage and warm butter. I had flour to my elbows and a list in my head a mile long. Through the kitchen window the yard was white and still, the kind of perfect Christmas morning you only get a handful of times in a marriage. Our daughters were sprawled in the living room in their new pajamas, picking through chocolate coins. It felt, for about an hour, like nothing in the world was wrong.

I needed to know whether Daniel had picked up the second bottle of wine or whether I'd be sending him out into the cold. Such a small thing. I wiped my hands on a dish towel and walked down the hall to the office, already half-laughing at how I'd have to nag him out of his chair.

The door was cracked. He didn't hear me. He was sitting at the desk in nothing but a pair of running shorts, hunched forward, typing fast, the screen throwing a pale blue light across his bare shoulders. He had that absorbed posture I hadn't seen in years, leaning in like a teenager. For one second I thought, how nice, he's writing the thank-you notes early.

Then I read it.

The window was open wide, the words large and unhidden. Her name was at the top, a young woman from his department I'd met exactly once at a summer barbecue. Pretty. Quiet. She had complimented my potato salad. And there in front of me was an email that no man writes to a colleague, line after line of it, intimate in a way that turned my stomach to ice. There was no other interpretation. There was no innocent angle. He had simply assumed he was alone in the house on Christmas morning.

I stood in the doorway. I read it twice, because the first time my brain refused to keep the words in order. The radio in the kitchen was still playing something soft and festive. I could hear one of the girls laughing.

"What the hell is this?" I asked. My voice came out flat, almost polite.

He froze. He didn't even turn the screen away, which somehow made it worse, as though some part of him had already given up. His shoulders dropped. He let out a long breath through his nose and said, quietly, "Oh. Uh. I guess you caught me."

That was it. Not I'm sorry. Not it's not what it looks like. Just the small, surrendered admission of a man who'd been caught, on the one morning of the year that was supposed to be untouchable.

I nodded. I'm still not sure where the calm came from, only that it arrived like a shield I hadn't known I owned. I looked at him sitting there, half-dressed and hollowed out, and I felt the last warm thread of the morning snap clean.

"Dinner's ready," I said.

Then I turned around and walked back to the kitchen, basted the turkey, called the girls to the table, and let him sit alone in the blue glow of everything he'd just lost.
