She leaned in.

A second account she had never seen. From it, every month for the better part of six years, a standing transfer for the rent on a flat across the city. Another for fees to a university, paid in full each autumn term, the kind of figure that would have covered her own degree four times over. And a name attached to the correspondence. A woman, thirty-five years old, a student. His.

Marguerite did not cry, not then. She sat very still and felt the floor of her life tilt and slide. She thought of the boiler that was always dying. She thought of the coat. She thought of all the times she had apologized for wanting something, for daring to imagine a version of herself that wore scrubs and helped people, and how he had patted her hand and called her ambitions a luxury they couldn't stretch to.

There had always been money. There had simply never been money for her.

He had taken her dream and quietly spent it on someone else's. He had used the word "we" to mean "I" and let her carry the guilt of the difference. The tightness she had felt around their finances for a decade and a half hadn't been a shortage. It had been a choice, made monthly, in an account she was never meant to see.

She gathered the statements into a neat stack, the way she gathered everything. Then she looked up at the man from the bank and asked, in a voice steadier than she felt, what it would take to enroll for the spring term.
