Daniel was the kind of man who never forgot anything, and for eleven years I thought that was a kind of love.

He set reminders for our anniversary three weeks out so the flowers would arrive fresh. He scheduled the car service before the light ever came on. He had an app that fired off a "good morning" text to his mother every Sunday at eight so she'd never feel neglected, even when his quarter was on fire and he was living out of airports. People at his firm called him relentless. I called him reliable. I used to brag about it at dinner parties, the way some women brag about a husband who cooks. My husband, I'd say, never drops a ball in his life.

I should have noticed how strange it was that a man so careful had started locking his phone with his face turned away from me.

It came on slowly, the way these things do. A second password I wasn't given. A drawer in his office that used to be junk and now didn't open. Trips that grew a day longer than the conference schedule I could find online. When I asked, he had an answer for everything, smooth and reasonable, delivered without a flicker. I'd lie awake afterward feeling vaguely insane, as though I'd accused a saint of stealing. He was so good at being calm that my own suspicion started to feel like the thing that needed fixing.

So I did what suspicious wives do and what I'm not proud of. I started watching. Not his phone, which was a fortress, but the small things. The way he smiled at a notification and then wiped it off his face when he felt me look. The new cologne. The gym membership he never used but kept paying for. I gathered these like a person collecting symptoms before they're brave enough to see a doctor.

It was a Tuesday in early spring when it ended. An ordinary night. We were on the couch with the heating blanket and some cooking competition neither of us was really watching, my feet in his lap, his hand absently rubbing my ankle. I remember thinking, almost guiltily, that maybe I'd imagined all of it. That this was just what a long marriage looked like, comfortable and a little quiet, and I'd been inventing a villain out of boredom.

Then his phone buzzed on the arm of the sofa.

He didn't reach for it right away, which is the only reason I saw the screen light up. Just a banner, a name I didn't know, and a line of a message I wish to God I could unread. I won't repeat what it said. It was the kind of paragraph a man writes to a woman he has been with for a long time, full of private things, the kind of words he had not aimed at me in years. At the bottom, four words that broke the world clean in half: *you're a week early.*

A week early.

I watched the color leave his face in real time. He grabbed the phone, but it was too late, and we both knew it was too late, and the worst part was that I understood instantly. The careful man. The man who scheduled his mother's good mornings and our anniversary flowers. He had scheduled her too. He'd written something for her birthday so he wouldn't forget it in the chaos of his life, and he'd fed the wrong date into the same app that ran the rest of his immaculate world. The machine he built to never drop a ball had handed me the proof while I sat with my feet in his lap.

He started talking fast. I don't remember the words, only that none of them were *I'm sorry* for a very long time. I remember standing up and feeling oddly steady, the way you do at the exact center of a disaster, before the shaking starts. I remember thinking that he had loved her enough to be organized about her. That she had a slot in his calendar. That somewhere in his phone, our anniversary and her birthday lived a few entries apart.

Later I learned it had been almost two years. The longer trips. The unused gym. The drawer. Every symptom I'd collected and second-guessed had been true, and the only thing I'd been wrong about was myself.

People ask if I'm angry at the app, the stupid little automation that did me this brutal favor. I'm not. He didn't fail because the machine glitched. The machine worked perfectly. It just told the truth a week before he was ready, and for that, strangely, I'm grateful. I'd have spent years more doubting my own mind.

He never forgot anything. In the end, that was the whole problem. He simply remembered her too.
