We had a rule, and it was the only thing I asked for.

When Renata and I started seeing each other, I was in the worst stretch of my life — a job I'd lost, a father in a hospital across the country, a lease I couldn't really afford on my own. I didn't have the bandwidth for anything heavy, and neither did she. So we agreed: nothing exclusive, no pressure, no performance. But if either of us started seeing someone else, we'd say it out loud. Just say it. Don't make the other person a fool. That was the whole contract. It cost nothing, and it was supposed to be the easy part.

That Thursday she'd texted me around noon. Buried at work, she said. Two deadlines collapsing into one. Three little message bubbles, then a heart, then an apology for canceling our drink that evening. I remember typing back something kind, telling her not to worry, telling her to eat something between meetings. I meant it. I was the kind of tired where you're grateful for an excuse to stay home.

By late afternoon a friend talked me into walking with him across the city to pick up something he'd ordered. The sidewalks were packed the way they only get when the weather finally turns — everyone out at once, shoulders brushing, that warm collective hum of a few million people pretending they have somewhere important to be. I wasn't looking for anything. You don't look for anything in a crowd that size. The whole point of a city is that you disappear into it.

And then I didn't.

She was maybe thirty feet ahead, moving toward me through the river of strangers, laughing at something. Her hand was folded into the hand of a man I'd never seen — not loosely, not by accident, but the comfortable, practiced way you hold someone you've been holding for a while. The deadlines I'd been so understanding about were apparently this. The thing that stopped me wasn't jealousy. It was the math. She'd had every chance to just say it. The rule cost nothing.

My friend saw my face and figured it out fast. He told me to shout, to make a scene, to let the sidewalk hear what she'd done. I didn't. I just stopped walking and let the crowd part around me like a stone in a stream. I waited until she was close enough that there was no hiding from it, until her eyes lifted and found mine and the laugh drained right out of her face. I held her gaze for one long second. Then I turned and walked the other way without a word.

She emailed for two weeks. Long ones, then short ones, then just subject lines. I never answered a single one. There was nothing to answer. She'd already told me everything I needed to know — in the middle of eight million people, with her hand in someone else's, on the one afternoon she swore she was too busy to be seen.
