I remember the exact moment my world tilted. It was February 15th, and I was sitting on a bench in the Jardin des Tuileries, watching a cluster of children chase pigeons. The grey Parisian sky hung low, mirroring the weight in my chest. I had been in France for three months, surviving on croissants and weekly FaceTime calls with Leo, my boyfriend of five years back in Chicago. We had promised this semester would fly by, that distance was just a test we'd ace. I still believed that when my phone buzzed with his name.

“Hey, babe,” he said, his voice light, almost cheerful. “Happy belated Valentine’s.”

“You too,” I smiled, ignoring the ache. He’d sent flowers a week late, but I’d forgiven him. That was our rhythm.

We talked about my classes, his job, the snow in Chicago. Then he paused, and I heard him take a long breath. “So, um, there’s something I need to tell you.”

My stomach tightened. “What is it?”

“You know Maya? From the marketing team?”

I did. A pretty girl with a sharp laugh who always liked his Instagram posts. “Yeah?”

“She’s pregnant.”

A beat. I frowned, confused. “Okay? That’s… sudden. But why are you telling me?”

Another pause, longer this time. Then a sigh that sounded almost theatrical. “Because it’s mine.”

The world stopped. The children’s laughter faded to a distant hum. I gripped the phone so hard my knuckles went white. “What?”

“It happened a few months ago. We were at a work party, and I was drunk. It was stupid. I’m sorry.” His voice turned defensive. “But I waited to tell you until today, because I didn’t want to ruin your Valentine’s Day.”

I laughed—a hollow, broken sound. “You waited until the day after so you wouldn’t ruin it? Do you hear yourself?”

“I thought you’d appreciate it,” he said, and I heard actual pride in his tone. “I was being considerate.”

My mind raced. Six years of memories—our first apartment, his mom’s lasagna, the way he held my hand at his father’s funeral—shattered into fragments. “Considerate? You knocked up another woman, and you’re congratulating yourself on the timing?”

“I didn’t mean for it to happen. But I had to tell you sometime. And I figured Valentine’s Day would be ruined anyway, so better the day after.”

I stood up, my legs shaking. The bench was suddenly too small, the garden too bright. “You ruined my entire relationship, Leo. Not just a holiday.”

“Are you going to break up with me?” He sounded genuinely surprised. “I said I was sorry. It was one mistake.”

“She’s pregnant. That’s not a mistake; that’s a child.” I was shouting now, aware of a woman staring from a nearby bench. “We were supposed to get married. You said distance was temporary.”

He sighed again. “I still love you. We can work through this.”

“No.” The word came out steady, final. “You waited until the day after Valentine’s to tell me you’re having a baby with another woman. That’s not love. That’s cowardice.”

I hung up before he could respond. The call ended, and the silence rushed in. I dropped onto the bench, my phone dangling from my hand. The children were gone now, the pigeons still pecking at crumbs. I stared at the Eiffel Tower in the distance, a needle of iron piercing the clouds. It was February 16th in Paris, and I had never felt so alone.

Later that night, I deleted every photo of us. But I kept his last message, unread: “I honestly thought I was doing the right thing.” I never replied. Some betrayals don’t deserve closure.
