Tutmayan Rakamlar

Daniel fell in love with that bike before he ever fell out of love with me.

It arrived on a Tuesday, the most expensive thing we had ever bought that wasn't a car, and he wheeled it into the spare bedroom with the reverence of a man receiving a relic. For two years it earned its keep. Every morning at five-forty, before the kids stirred, I would hear the hum of the flywheel through the wall, the muffled cadence of an instructor counting down a climb, Daniel grunting through intervals like he was being chased. He went from soft around the middle to lean and ropey. He talked about watts and output and personal records the way other men talked about their fantasy teams. I teased him about it, but secretly I loved it. He was happy. He was healthy. He was here.

I knew his numbers because he made sure I did. He would pad into the kitchen still dripping, phone in hand, and show me the little graph. "Beat my own record again," he'd say, and I'd press a cold glass of water into his hand and feel proud of him. Over two years those numbers only ever climbed. He was, according to the leaderboard, one of the strongest riders in his age bracket in the whole country. He showed me that too, more than once.

So I noticed the day the floor fell out.

It was a quiet thing, the way the worst things often are. I'd started glancing at his rides on my own phone because the app let me, a casual habit, the same way you might check the weather. And one Thursday in March his output had simply collapsed. Not a bad day, not a tired morning. A seventy percent drop. The graph that had spent two years pointing at the sky had fallen off a cliff. The cadence was different. The resistance was different. The numbers belonged to someone else entirely.

I assumed he was sick. I made soup. He ate it and laughed and said he felt great, never better, and that night I heard the flywheel hum at nine in the evening, hours after his real workout, and the second ride was strong again, the way his rides used to be.

That was the first wrong note. There were two riders.

I want to tell you I confronted him cleanly, but suspicion doesn't work like that. It works like a slow leak. I started watching the timestamps. The weak rides always came mid-morning, between nine and noon, on the days I worked at the clinic. The strong rides came at dawn or late at night, when Daniel was the only adult in the house. Someone was on that bike while I was gone. Someone small. Someone lighter than my husband, with a softer cadence and less power in their legs, climbing his hills at a fraction of his strength, leaving their faint signature in the data like a stranger's footprints in fresh snow.

I knew before I knew. You always do.

I came home on a Wednesday I was supposed to spend at work. I'd left a file behind, that was the lie I told myself, though I think some part of me had already decided. There was a small silver sedan I didn't recognize parked two doors down. The spare bedroom door was closed, and behind it I could hear the flywheel and a woman laughing at something, breathless, telling him she couldn't keep up with his program, that she didn't know how he did this every day.

She didn't know how he did it every day. Because he didn't. He never had to. He just handed her his profile, his bike, his recorded life, and let the machine quietly file her efforts under his name while he stood in the doorway watching.

The cruelest part wasn't the affair. It was the math. He had been so careful about everything else, the phone face-down, the late nights at the office, the new cologne he said was a free sample. He had thought of all of it. He simply never imagined that the bike he loved, the bike that knew his body better than I did by then, would keep an honest record when he could not. It measured her and it told the truth, every single morning, in a language he taught me himself.

I didn't scream. I stood in the hallway until the laughing stopped and the door opened, and I watched two faces understand, at the same instant, that the numbers had never lied.

He kept the bike in the divorce. I hope every time he rides it, it remembers.
