My husband, Daniel, has an identical twin brother named Marcus, and for eleven years I thought that fact was nothing more than a party trick.

People always wanted the stories. The teachers who marked the wrong boy absent. The girlfriend in college who kissed the wrong one in a dark kitchen. Daniel loved telling them, leaning back with that easy grin, and I loved that I could always tell them apart. It was the smallest things. Daniel's left eyebrow had a faint scar from a bike accident at nine. Marcus held his coffee with both hands like he was perpetually cold. After a decade, I could pick my husband out of a crowd by the way his shoulders sat. I was proud of that. I thought it meant I knew him.

That Saturday started ordinary in the way that all the worst days do. Daniel had a work thing, some client breakfast that ran long, so Marcus offered to drive me to the outlet mall to help me find a coat. Marcus was the gentler twin, the one who remembered birthdays, and I liked having him along. We were laughing about something stupid near the food court, two coffees going cold in our hands, when a woman crossed the open floor toward us with the brightest smile I had ever seen on a stranger.

She came up behind Marcus. She slid her arms around his waist, pressed her cheek between his shoulder blades, and said something low and warm against his back, something about how good last night had been, how she hadn't been able to stop thinking about the hotel.

Marcus went rigid. I watched the color drain out of his face in real time, watched him turn around with his hands half raised like a man trying to calm a spooked animal. And the woman's smile collapsed. She looked at his face, then his hands, then back at his face, searching for something she couldn't find.

"You're not," she said. "You're not him."

For one merciful second I thought she was simply mistaken, a confused stranger who had grabbed the wrong man. I almost laughed. I almost said, oh, he gets this all the time, his brother looks just like him. I had the words right there in my mouth.

Then she looked at me. Really looked at me, at my hand resting on Marcus's arm, at the wedding set on my finger, and something terrible moved behind her eyes. Recognition. Not of me, but of what I was. The wife. The actual wife. And I understood, all at once and far too late, that there were two men in this city with my husband's face, and she had spent last night with the other one.

The mall kept moving around us. A child dragged a balloon past. An announcement chimed about a sale ending soon. And the three of us stood frozen in the middle of it while the whole architecture of my marriage quietly came apart.

She did not run. I will give her that. Maybe she was too stunned to lie, or maybe some part of her had wanted out of it for a long time. She sat down with us at a sticky plastic table and she told me everything, her voice shaking, her eyes wet. The eight months. The hotel near the airport. The "client breakfasts." The way he'd told her his wife traveled for work, which I never have, not once. She thought he was almost free of me. She thought she was the future.

Marcus said nothing the entire time. He just held his coffee with both hands, the way he always did, like he was suddenly very cold.

When she finally left, I sat in the parking lot of that outlet mall for an hour and a half, and Marcus sat with me, and neither of us could think of a single thing worth saying. Daniel called twice. I let it ring. I kept thinking about all those stories he loved to tell, the wrong boy, the dark kitchen, the kissed twin, how he'd built a whole charming personality around being impossible to tell apart. He'd been counting on it. He just never imagined the trick would run in the other direction.

I always believed I could tell my husband from his brother by the set of his shoulders. It turns out that was the only honest thing I ever knew about him. I knew the surface of him perfectly and not one inch underneath.

I don't tell the twin stories at parties anymore. Daniel can have those. He earned them.
