Sự phản bội qua BeReal

Hình phản chiếu trên màn hình TV cho thấy một người phụ nữ đang buộc dây giày ở cuối giường của anh.

Toàn bộ câu chuyện bên dưới bằng tiếng Anh.

Alex and I had been together for two years, and I thought I knew every corner of his soul. He was the guy who left sticky notes on my mirror, who remembered how I took my coffee even when I changed it seasonally. Which is why, when he texted me that Wednesday evening saying he felt a cold coming on and was going to bed early, I didn't think twice. I sent back a teary-eyed emoji and told him to drink ginger tea.

I was curled up on my own couch, half-watching a baking show, when my phone buzzed with a BeReal notification. The app had become a playful ritual between us—a way to share unpolished moments. I opened it and saw his face: pale, hair mussed, chin resting on a pillow. The front camera captured him looking sorry for himself. But the back camera—the one that shows where you are—caught the dark sheen of his TV screen across the room.

At first, I barely registered it. Just the faint outline of his dresser, the curve of his lamp. Then my eyes snagged on something else. A shape. A person. Sitting on the edge of the bed, legs dangling, head bent down as if tying something. The reflection was tiny, ghostly, but unmistakable: the silhouette of a woman, her hair pulled back, one hand reaching toward her foot.

I blinked. I zoomed in with my fingers, the image blurring into pixels. I held my breath and zoomed again, adjusting the brightness on my phone. There she was. Clear enough to see the bend of her torso, the foot she was working on, the laces of a sneaker. She was getting ready to leave.

My stomach dropped like a stone. I re-read his text: "Just gonna crash early, babe. Feel gross." The time matched the BeReal. He was in bed, supposedly alone, and there was a woman tying her shoe beside him.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I just felt a strange, cold stillness settle over me. I took a screenshot of the BeReal, then another of the zoomed-in reflection. I saved them both. My thumb hovered over his name, and I pressed the call button.

He answered on the fourth ring, his voice groggy. "Hey, you okay?"

"Who is she?" I asked, my voice flat.

"What? Who?" He coughed, trying to sound sick.

"In your BeReal. The reflection in the TV. There's a woman sitting on your bed, tying her shoes."

Silence. A long, crackling pause. I heard him swallow.

"Maya, I don't—that's not—it's just the light."

"I zoomed in, Alex. I see her hair. I see her hands. Don't lie to me."

Another pause, then a sigh. "Okay. Okay, it's... it's my coworker, Jenna. She stopped by to drop off some soup. She was just leaving."

"Soup? At ten p.m.? While you're supposedly asleep? And she sits on your bed to tie her shoes?"

"It's not what you think."

But I knew it was exactly what I thought. I could feel it in the way his words came too quickly, in the way the silence before them stretched too long. I looked at the reflection again, at the intimacy of that small gesture—her hands on her laces, ready to slip away.

"We're done," I said, and hung up.

He called back seven times. I let them go to voicemail. I stared at the photo until my eyes burned, then I forwarded it to my own email and deleted his contact. The next morning, I packed the hoodie he had left at my place into a box and dropped it at his door. I never looked at a BeReal the same way again.

That reflection taught me something: sometimes the smallest details hold the biggest lies. And once you see them, you can't unsee them.
