The proof was a single screenshot, and I stared at it for a long time before I let myself believe it.

Marisol had left her tablet on the kitchen counter, screen up, the way she'd done a hundred mornings without consequence. But that morning a message slid down from the top like a coin dropping into a slot. A name I didn't recognize. A time. A place I knew, the small lot behind the wine bar on Aldous Street where we used to park when we were new and broke and couldn't afford the valet. *Same spot as last week?* it said. *Can't stop thinking about Tuesday.*

I didn't scream. I didn't throw anything. I sat at our table with my coffee going cold and felt the floor of my life quietly tilt.

When she came home that evening I didn't lead up to it. I just turned the tablet toward her, the way you'd show someone a wound. I watched the recognition move across her face in stages: the flush, the flicker of a lie being assembled, then the abandonment of the lie when she saw I already had the dates, the lot, the name.

For about four seconds, she was simply caught. And in those four seconds I saw her decide what to do with it.

What she did was sink to the kitchen floor. Not crying yet, just folding, her back against the cabinet, her breath going ragged in a way I'd never heard. Then the words came, low and terrible. That she couldn't live with what she'd done. That if I left she didn't see a reason to be here at all. That there were pills in the bathroom and she'd thought about them more than once this week.

And here is the thing I'm ashamed of. My anger evaporated. Just like that. The screenshot, Aldous Street, the name, Tuesday, all of it dissolved into a single roaring instinct to keep her safe. I was on the floor with her, holding her, saying *no, no, stay with me, we'll figure it out.* The man I was supposed to be furious at was now begging the woman who'd betrayed me not to disappear.

We sat like that for an hour. I cancelled the friend I was supposed to meet. I hid the bathroom cabinet. I spent the night awake beside her, watching her breathe, and somewhere in that long dark I noticed something that made my stomach turn cold.

She was sleeping. Deeply. Peacefully.

The crisis had arrived the exact instant she'd been cornered, and it had done precisely one job: it had moved the spotlight off her and onto her. My trauma had become her emergency. My grief had become the thing I owed her.

It took me three more weeks to understand that you can love someone and still be handled by them. That empathy, in the wrong hands, is just another door left unlocked. I made sure she had real help, the professional kind, from people who weren't in love with her and couldn't be steered.

Then I packed a bag and left for the spot behind the wine bar on Aldous Street, and I sat there alone, and for the first time in a month I let myself be the person it had actually happened to.
