The phone buzzed against the nightstand at 11:40, and I reached over to silence it before it woke her.

That was the whole reason I touched it. I want to be clear about that, because afterward everyone wanted to know why I'd been "going through" her things, and I hadn't. Daniel doesn't go through people's things. My anxiety makes me the kind of person who apologizes to furniture I bump into. I knew her passcode the way you know the color of someone's eyes, and I'd never once used it.

But the screen lit before I could turn it dark, and a group thread was already open. Three girls she'd known since high school. A name at the top I recognized: Marcus. Her ex. The one she'd promised was "ancient history," a closed chapter she'd laughed about over diner fries our second week together.

The history did not read as ancient.

I'm not going to repeat the exact words, because they're still carved somewhere behind my ribs and I don't need to read them twice. The gist was a boast. The night before. How she "couldn't walk." How her friends should be jealous. Crude, gleeful, written in that breathless caps-lock way people use when they think no one outside the circle will ever see it. The night before. We'd had dinner the night before. She'd texted me a heart at 9 and said she was exhausted, going to bed early.

I sat on the edge of the mattress in the blue dark with her breathing soft behind me, and I felt my whole nervous system come apart very quietly, like a sweater pulled by one thread.

The terrible part wasn't even the act. We'd never said the word exclusive out loud, though we'd lived it for months. The terrible part was the audience. The bragging. The way I had been a footnote in her real story, a steady boy she kept on the shelf while she chased the chaos she actually wanted. I'd built my entire fragile peace around the belief that I was, for once, enough for someone.

I didn't wake her. I put the phone back exactly where it had been, face down, and I lay there until the window turned grey. I rehearsed sentences I never said.

In the morning she stretched and called me her favorite person and asked if I'd slept okay. I said I had. I made us coffee. I watched her scroll through that same thread at the kitchen table, thumb flicking, a small private smile on her face, and I understood that the smile had never once been about me.

I broke it off that weekend. I told her it wasn't working, which was true and which was also a mercy I'm not sure she deserved. She cried and asked what changed. I almost told her. Instead I said some chapters just close.

She'd recognize the phrase. She used it on me first.

It took my mind a long time to stop replaying that screen. But somewhere in the recovery I found a small, hard piece of clarity I get to keep: I will never again mistake being convenient for being chosen.
