We were the careful kind of couple. The kind who shredded bank statements, who covered the laptop camera with a sticker, who laughed at friends still using their dog's name as a password for everything. Daniel set up the shared vault three years into the marriage, a single encrypted app holding the logins for our joint checking, the mortgage portal, the streaming accounts, the electric bill. One master key, two people, total transparency. That was the whole point, he said. No secrets, just good hygiene.

I almost never browsed the raw vault. I used the search bar like a sane person, typing "Netflix" or "Chase" and grabbing what I needed. Daniel knew that about me. He counted on it, I think.

It was a Tuesday night, dishes still soaking, when I decided to finally update the beneficiaries on our life insurance. Morbid errand, but the kind responsible people do. I scrolled the vault for the policy and found a Secure Note he'd created, titled in his flat, sensible way: "Life Insurance Policy Updates." Perfect. I tapped it open, ready to copy account numbers.

There were no account numbers.

What loaded instead was a tidy little list, the same orderly formatting he used for everything. A street address two towns over. A Wi-Fi network name and password. A four-digit alarm code. A login for a leasing portal I'd never heard of. For a long moment my brain refused it, tried to make the words mean something innocent, a storage unit, a work thing, a surprise. But the leasing portal had a tenant name on it, and the name was his.

I sat very still at the kitchen table while the dishwater went cold. He had built a second life with the same meticulous care he'd built our first one. He'd rented an apartment, set up the internet, programmed the alarm, and then, because he was so security-conscious, so allergic to leaving a paper trail, he'd hidden all of it in the one place he was certain I'd never look. Not in a burner phone. Not in a locked drawer. In our vault. Behind a label so boring I'd have scrolled past it a thousand times.

I copied the address into my own phone before I did anything else. Old habit. Good hygiene.

The next afternoon I drove there. A beige building with a courtyard, the kind of place that photographs well. I didn't need to go up. I sat in the car and watched her come out with a grocery bag, comfortable, unhurried, a woman who lived there. She had a key on a lanyard. She knew the alarm code I now knew too.

The thing that haunts me isn't the apartment. It's the title he chose. Insurance. He'd thought of her as the thing that protected him, the soft place he kept in reserve in case our careful, transparent, locked-down marriage ever failed him.

It hadn't failed. Until he opened that account, it never once had.
