The dog growled at him on a Tuesday, and that growl ended my marriage four days later.

You have to understand what kind of dog Biscuit was. He was the kind of golden retriever that made strangers stop on the sidewalk. He leaned his whole body weight against the legs of delivery drivers. He once fell asleep in the lap of a plumber he'd met ninety seconds earlier. In six years he had never so much as bared a tooth, not at the vet, not at the fireworks, not at the toddler who tugged his ears every Thanksgiving. He loved people the way some people love money. Indiscriminately, and a little embarrassingly.

And he loved Dorian most of all.

Dorian was my best friend. We'd met at a pickup basketball game three years back, two grown men out of breath and laughing, and we'd folded into each other's lives the easy way it sometimes happens past thirty. He came over for the game on Sundays. He had a key for when we traveled. He'd taught Biscuit to shake, then to high-five, then some ridiculous trick where the dog would flop dramatically onto his side when Dorian pointed a finger gun at him. For a solid year, the sound of Dorian's car in the drive sent Biscuit spinning in joyful circles by the door, nails clicking on the hardwood like applause.

So when Dorian came in that Tuesday and Biscuit went low, I thought I was misreading it.

The dog had dropped his head. His shoulders rolled forward, hackles standing in a stiff ridge down his spine, and a sound came out of him I had genuinely never heard in six years of living with him. Low. Continuous. Coming up from somewhere under the floorboards. Camille came out of the kitchen drying her hands and froze in the doorway.

"Biscuit," I said. "Hey. Hey, it's Dorian."

The dog didn't even glance at me. He kept his eyes locked on Dorian and took one slow, deliberate step backward, putting his body between the hallway and the rest of the house. Between Dorian and Camille.

Dorian laughed, but it came out thin. "What's gotten into you, buddy?" He crouched and held out the back of his hand the way he always had, the way the dog had nuzzled a thousand times. Biscuit's lip peeled back off his teeth. Camille said, sharply, too quickly, "Just put him in the yard, he's being weird," and I remember thinking it was a strange thing to be angry about.

I put him in the yard. We watched the game. It was fine. Everyone said it was fine.

But it kept happening. Wednesday, Dorian texted to drop off a drill he'd borrowed, and Biscuit met him at the door like he was a man with a knife. Thursday, Camille said maybe Dorian shouldn't come around for a while, just until the dog settled, and there was something rehearsed in how reasonable she made it sound. I started watching the dog the way you watch a smoke detector that won't stop chirping. He was perfect with everyone else. The mailman got his belly rubbed. A neighbor's kid got licked half to death. It was only Dorian. Only ever Dorian.

I am not a man who believes dogs have a sixth sense. I believe in smells. And on Thursday night, lying awake, I finally let myself finish the thought I'd been swallowing for three days. Dogs read scent the way we read faces. And a dog who had spent a year loving a man would notice, instantly and completely, the day that man started smelling like the inside of my wife's life.

I checked her phone in the morning while she showered. I'm not proud of it. I didn't need long. The thread went back eleven weeks. There was a hotel near the office. There was a recurring "lunch with the girls" that the messages made very plainly clear was not lunch and not with the girls. There was a line where Dorian had written that he felt sick coming to the house, sitting on my couch, and Camille had written back that they just had to be careful.

They were careful with me. They were careful with each other. Neither of them thought to be careful around the dog.

When I showed her the phone she didn't argue. She sat down on the edge of the tub with her hair still wet and she cried, the real kind, the kind that's mostly fear, and the whole confession came out in pieces over the next hour. How long. How it started. How they'd told themselves it didn't count because they hadn't decided anything yet. My best friend. My house. My Sunday afternoons.

She is gone now. So is he, obviously, which is its own particular grief, losing the affair and the friend in the same breath. The house is quieter than I knew a house could be.

Biscuit sleeps on her side of the bed now. Every time the door opens he lifts his head, checks, and lays it back down. He stopped growling the day she packed her bags, like whatever he'd smelled had finally walked out for good.

I keep thinking he tried to tell me for a year. I just needed three days of his snarling to finally understand the one language in that house that never once lied to me.
