I gave him the kit as a joke, really. Two little cardboard boxes wrapped in the gold paper we'd saved from Christmas, propped against the wine bottle for our third anniversary. Daniel laughed the way I loved, the laugh that crinkled the corners of his eyes, and we sat on the kitchen floor spitting into plastic tubes like idiots, narrating in fake documentary voices. "And here we observe the male in his natural habitat." We sealed the envelopes, kissed over the postbox slot, and forgot about them.

Three weeks passed. I'd half stopped caring by the time the email pinged on a slow Tuesday. *Your results are ready.* I called him over with my mug still in hand, ready to find out which percent of us was secretly Viking.

The page loaded his ethnicity, then mine, then a tab I hadn't expected: relatives. A little colored bar sat between our two names. The label under it said *First Cousin.*

I laughed first. That's the part I keep returning to. I assumed it was a glitch, a mixed-up sample, the kind of thing you'd screenshot for the group chat. Daniel didn't laugh. He went very still, the stillness of a man who has just heard a sound in an empty house. "Refresh it," he said. I refreshed it. The bar stayed.

We grew up four hundred miles apart. Different surnames, different schools, met at a friend's wedding. There was no overlap, no shared anything, except — and the thought arrived slowly, like cold water finding a crack — except that my mother had a younger sister, my aunt Marguerite, who'd lived near Daniel's hometown for years. The aunt who had been so *warm* to him at every family dinner. The aunt who once stayed late helping him "fix something on his car" while the rest of us did dishes.

I watched the blood leave his face as the math assembled itself behind his eyes, and I understood that he was not surprised by the cousin part. He was surprised that I now knew the only way that cousin part could be true.

He didn't deny it. That's the cruelty of a good DNA test — it leaves you no doorway to lie through. The story came out in pieces over the next hour, his hands shaking, mine cold around a mug of tea gone stale. It had been going on for most of our relationship. Quiet weekends. A burner messaging app. My aunt. His secret. A betrayal that had quietly braided two families together in a way no one could untangle.

I think about the spit sometimes. How we laughed into those tubes. How a thing I bought to celebrate three years of trust became the instrument that proved none of it was real, that the man across my kitchen floor had been sleeping with my mother's sister while pretending to memorize our song.

I packed a bag that night and drove to a motel with a flickering vacancy sign. I didn't cry until the parking lot. What undid me wasn't only what he'd done — it was every family Christmas now rewritten, every photograph poisoned, my whole childhood gallery hanging crooked.

The report is still in my inbox. I never deleted it. Some nights I open it just to look at that small colored bar and remind myself it wasn't a nightmare I invented. It was the truth, mailed back to me in a prepaid envelope.
