The Episode We Never Watched Together

We had exactly one sacred rule, and it was about a television show.

It sounds absurd now, saying it out loud. But when you spend a year with someone, you build these little rituals that feel like load-bearing walls. Ours was a slow, brooding crime drama with a body count and a dozen tangled timelines. We had promised, half-joking and half-serious, that neither of us would ever watch ahead without the other. No sneaking an episode at lunch. No "just the first ten minutes." We watched it together, on the couch, my arm around Priya, a blanket over both of us, or we didn't watch it at all.

That Thursday I came home late from a double shift, exhausted in the way that makes your eyes sting. Priya was already asleep. I figured I'd unwind with a single episode of something dumb, and then I saw the show sitting right there on the home screen, taunting me. I clicked our shared profile out of pure habit.

And the TV did something strange. It didn't resume where we'd left off, on that cliffhanger in the parking garage. It loaded a countdown to auto-play an episode two full hours past that. The little red progress bar underneath sat fat and complete, like the whole stretch had already been watched.

My first thought was genuinely innocent. A glitch. The app syncing wrong, the cloud confusing our profile with someone else's. I actually laughed about it. The next morning, coffee in hand, I mentioned it to her like a joke. "Hey, the TV thinks we cheated on our own rule."

The word landed wrong before I even understood why. She went very still over the sink. Her shoulders changed. When she turned around, her face was doing that thing where someone tries to choose between four different lies and runs out of time. She started to say the kids upstairs must have used the password, then remembered we didn't have anyone upstairs. She started to say she'd had it on for background noise, then stopped, because background noise doesn't move a progress bar forward in a perfect, continuous line for two hours.

I didn't yell. I just kept looking at her, watching the story assemble itself in the silence between us. The progress bar didn't care about our rule. It had simply recorded the truth, minute by minute, the way only a machine can: someone had been here, on our couch, under a blanket maybe, while I was clocking ten hours across town.

It came out in pieces over the next hour. A man. Our apartment. Our profile, left running because she wanted noise in the room and didn't think a streaming service kept that kind of receipt.

The thing that haunts me isn't the man. It's that she chose our show. The one thing that was ours. She let it play in the background of the worst night of my year, and the algorithm, faithful and indifferent, saved the timestamp like evidence she never meant to leave.

We never finished the series. I couldn't make it past that parking garage. Some cliffhangers you just learn to live inside.
