The Flight That Was Three Hours Too Long

He told me about the trip the way you'd mention picking up milk. Over dinner, between bites, like it was nothing. A week in Italy. Solo. He needed to clear his head, he said, and didn't I understand that a man sometimes just needs to walk an old city by himself.

I said I understood. I didn't.

Daniel and I had been together eleven months, long enough that I'd learned the difference between his comfortable silences and his careful ones. This was the careful kind. He wouldn't quite meet my eyes when he said Florence. He used the word "vacation" twice, as if rehearsing it. And when I offered to drive him to the airport, he answered too fast. No need. He'd take a car.

I told myself I was being paranoid. Then I lay awake at two in the morning and the feeling wouldn't leave, this small cold stone sitting behind my ribs. He'd mentioned a girl once, early on, the way people mention old weather. Someone from back home, a country two oceans and a lifetime away. He'd laughed it off. I'd believed him because believing him was easier than the alternative.

The next morning I did something I'm not proud of and have never regretted. I opened my laptop and looked up flights. Not his flight. Just flights. Our city to the major Italian hubs. The numbers came back clean and consistent: seven hours, maybe seven and a half with a connection. Then, almost as an afterthought, I typed the name of his home country into the same box.

Ten hours. Direct. Every carrier, every day.

I sat there staring at the screen, and the cold stone behind my ribs turned to ice. Because the night before, scrolling past his shoulder while he booked, I'd seen the duration on the confirmation page. I'd seen it and not understood it. Ten hours, fifteen minutes.

You cannot argue with the sky. Distance is distance. A plane does not lie about how long it takes to cross an ocean. He could call it Italy all he wanted; the engines knew exactly where they were going.

I should have stopped there. I didn't. I went through the things people go through when they already know and need to be sure. Tagged photos. A location that kept surfacing. A name I'd never been given, attached to a face that looked at the camera like it had every right to him.

That was when the floor dropped out a second time. She wasn't the girl from back home. She was here. Local. Smiling in front of a restaurant I recognized, three weeks ago, on a night Daniel had told me he was working late.

He hadn't booked a flight to cheat on me. He'd booked it to cheat on her, the woman he was already cheating on me with. I was the secret kept from the secret. The other woman to the other woman, both of us furniture in a life he was running like a relay, handing himself off from one of us to the next.

I closed the laptop. I didn't cry, not yet. I just thought, with a strange flat calm: ten hours. Three hours too long for the story he told. And not nearly long enough to fly far enough away from what he'd done.
