The click of my mouse was the only sound in the quiet afternoon, punctuated by the gentle hum of my laptop fan. I was deep in a freelance graphic design project, my focus playlist—a carefully curated mix of ambient electronic and instrumental tracks—pumping through my wireless headphones. The deadline loomed, but I was in the zone, my thoughts flowing like the soft synth lines.

Then, without warning, the music stopped. A brief silence. I frowned, thinking the app had glitched. But then a new song began: "Earned It" by The Weeknd. My stomach tightened. That wasn't in any of my playlists. The slow, sultry beat filled my ears, the lyrics dripping with raw desire.

I pulled out my phone, unlocking it to see the Spotify screen. The app showed the song art, the progress bar, and—my blood ran cold—a small notification at the top: "Currently controlled by Michael's iPhone." Below it, a location: "Chicago, IL – Hotel Marriott." Michael was supposed to be at a mandatory corporate seminar in Chicago, but he should have been in the conference center, not a hotel room.

My hand trembled as I watched the next song queue up: "Pony" by Ginuwine. Then "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" by D'Angelo. Each selection felt like a knife twisting in my chest. He was creating a playlist for someone else. I could picture him in a hotel room, phone in hand, scrolling through songs to set the perfect mood. The shared family account—our account—became a window into his betrayal.

I switched my laptop screen back to the homepage. The live playlist showed his recent queue: a stream of intimate R&B and slow jams. Song after song, each more explicit than the last. I felt nauseous. The air in my home office turned stale, suffocating. The plants on my desk seemed to wilt as the truth settled over me like a heavy fog.

I checked the location again. The hotel was three miles from the conference venue. He had told me he'd be attending breakout sessions until six, then dinner with colleagues. It was now four-thirty. His activities suggested a different kind of breakout session.

My fingers moved on their own. I called his number. It rang once, twice. He answered, his voice hushed.

"Hey, babe. Everything okay?"

"Where are you?" My voice was steady, too steady.

"At the conference. Just finished a panel. Why?"

I stared at the Spotify screen. "Who are you with?"

A pause. "The guys from the sales team. We're grabbing coffee."

"Really? Because your phone is currently controlling my Spotify. And it's showing you at the Marriott on Michigan Avenue."

Silence stretched like a rubber band about to snap. In the background, I heard a woman's soft laugh. My heart shattered into a thousand pieces.

"Michael?"

"I can explain," he said, his voice cracking.

"Don't bother." I ended the call.

I yanked off my headphones and tossed them onto the desk. The room spun. I grabbed the edge of the desk, staring at the wedding photo on my shelf: us on the beach in Maui, laughing as the sun set behind us. Two years ago. Now, the sunset felt like a dying ember.

The Spotify continued to play, queuing up another track—"Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye. I swiped to disconnect his control, then deleted the entire history. But the damage was done. The music had spoken louder than any words ever could.

I sat in the silence, the cursor blinking on my laptop. The unfinished design stared back at me, but I couldn't focus. All I could see was the playlist—each song a confession, each note a betrayal. My home, my safe place, now felt like a crime scene. And the evidence was a soundtrack to a secret I never wanted to hear.
