It was a small question. That is the part I keep coming back to, even now. Not a lie, not a forgotten name, not lipstick or a stray text. Just a question, asked in the soft grey light of a Sunday evening as we drove home from her sister's.

We were stopped at the lights by the train station when she pointed. There was a pub on the corner, the kind with hanging baskets gone leggy and a chalkboard advertising a quiz night nobody attended. "Is that a hotel?" she asked. "Like, does it have rooms upstairs?"

I remember laughing. "Why, are we eloping?" She didn't laugh back. She just looked at it a beat too long, the way you study a thing you already half know, and then the light went green and she changed the subject to whether we'd defrosted anything for dinner.

I should have let it go. People ask odd things. But it lodged somewhere behind my ribs and stayed there, low and itching, for weeks. Mara had never once cared about that pub. We'd driven past it a hundred times. Why would she suddenly need to know if it had beds in it, in a part of town we never stopped in, near a station she never used because she drove everywhere?

For a while I told myself I was being the kind of man I'd always sworn I wouldn't be. Jealous. Small. I watered the suspicion down and went on. But it kept growing back, fed by little things I'd previously waved away. The phone turned face-down. The girls' night that ran until two and came home smelling of someone else's aftershave. The way she'd started locking the screen the instant she set it on the counter.

One Tuesday she was in the shower and her laptop was open and breathing on the kitchen table, and I did the thing I'd promised I never would. I told myself I was just going to be wrong and feel ashamed and that would be that. I'd earn back my own trust by finding nothing.

I found a thread instead. A man's name I didn't know. A girls' night two weeks before the drive. They'd met by the bar, exchanged numbers, kept talking. And there, in plain unbothered text, he had written to her: somewhere quiet, near the station, somewhere discreet — that little pub on the corner has rooms, doesn't it?

That little pub on the corner. The one she'd pointed at. She hadn't been wondering aloud. She'd been doing reconnaissance with me in the driver's seat, using my own car, my own evening, to scout the place she meant to betray me in.

I closed the laptop very gently, the way you close a door on a sleeping child. The shower was still running. I sat at the table where we'd eaten a thousand ordinary dinners and understood that the smallest question I'd ever been asked had also been the truest thing she'd ever said to me. I just hadn't known the language yet.
