He would narrate over the trailers in a mocking falsetto, predict the airport chase, call the third-act misunderstanding before the characters even met. Our couch was a museum of his actual tastes: grainy war documentaries, three-hour sci-fi thrillers, anything with submarines or collapsing empires. I used to tease that he watched television the way some men watch the news, jaw set, ready to be disappointed by humanity. It was one of the small, settled facts of our marriage. Daniel did not do soft.
