We were lying in the dark when she told me she could never cheat on me, and I believed her because she said it like a vow.

It started as nothing, the kind of slow late-night conversation couples drift into when the lights are off and there's nowhere else to be. Daniela had her head on my chest and we were talking about a friend of ours whose marriage had just detonated over an affair. I said something offhand about how I couldn't imagine doing that to someone. And she sat up.

She didn't just agree. She defended herself, fiercely, as though I'd accused her of something. "I'm not built that way," she said. "Some people have a wire missing. I would rather end a relationship than betray it. You understand that, right? Tell me you understand that." Her voice cracked on the last word. I held her and told her I did, and I meant it, and for one warm hour I felt like the luckiest man I knew.

But underneath the warmth there was a low hum I couldn't switch off. A wrongness. I'd been feeling it for weeks, the way you feel a draft in a sealed room and can't find the window. The phone turned face-down. The "working late" that had quietly become a season. The way her smile arrived a half-second after I expected it. I told myself her speech had cured all that. It hadn't. If anything, the intensity of her denial made the hum louder.

Three days later it stopped being a hum and became a siren.

I didn't know, until that night, that one of Daniela's coworkers and I ran in the same loose circle — a guy I'd met twice at a barbecue, the kind of acquaintance you nod at and forget. He'd been at her company's holiday party. And he had, apparently, watched my girlfriend slip into a dark alcove near the coat check with the man whose name was on her paychecks.

The text came in with no greeting. Just: "I'm sorry, man. You should see this." Then the photos.

They were clear. Too clear. Sharp enough to read the timestamp, sharp enough to recognize her earrings, the dress I'd zipped up for her that evening, her hand flat against the lapel of a man twenty years our senior. There was no angle of mercy, no way to squint it into something innocent. She wasn't being kissed. She was kissing.

I sat on the edge of the bed for a long time with the phone glowing in my hand, and the thing that gutted me wasn't even the boss, or the alcove, or the party I'd skipped because she said it'd be boring. It was her voice from three nights earlier. *I'm not built that way.* The conviction of it. She hadn't lied to me with a flinch. She'd lied to me with her whole heart, looking right at me, and let me thank her for it.

When she got home I had the photos open on the screen, face-up on the kitchen table where the phone used to live face-down. I didn't say anything. I just turned it toward her, and watched the speech she'd given me dissolve right off her face.
