La trappola del corso di ceramica

Mi iscrissi a un corso di ceramica il martedì sera per incastrare mio marito. Funzionò alla perfezione.

La storia completa qui sotto è in inglese.

I first suspected something was off when Jack started coming home with his shirt collar damp on dry evenings. He said he'd been jogging, but he never smelled of sweat—only of a perfume I didn't recognize, floral and faint, like crushed violets. I told myself I was being paranoid. Eight years of marriage, two kids, a mortgage: we were solid. But the damp collars became a pattern, then the late meetings, then the way he’d silence his phone when I walked into the room.

I hired a private investigator named Marcus. He was retired police, with a face like a disappointed grandfather and a voice that never rose above a murmur. I sat across from him at a diner, sliding my wedding ring around my finger while he asked questions. “Does he have any fixed commitments?” Marcus asked. “A gym class, a book club, anything you do alone every week at the same time?”

I thought about my Tuesday nights. I usually watched Netflix while Jack worked late. “Nothing regular,” I said.

Marcus smiled. “Then let’s make one.”

His plan was simple: I would sign up for a Tuesday evening pottery class at the community center, six to eight p.m., for six weeks. I’d tell Jack how excited I was, how I’d always wanted to learn. He’d know exactly where I’d be, and that knowledge would make him careless. “He’ll think he has a guaranteed window,” Marcus said. “That’s when he’ll move.”

I felt a strange thrill, half hope and half dread. I enrolled in “Wheel Throwing for Beginners.” On the first Tuesday, I kneaded cold clay under fluorescent lights, my hands trembling as I centered a lump on the wheel. I kept glancing at the clock. At 7:15, I texted Marcus: *Any sign?*

He replied an hour later: *Got him. Followed him to an apartment on Maple. She came to the door in a robe. I have photos.*

The clay slipped through my fingers. I left the wheel spinning and walked out into the autumn rain, my apron still wet with slip. I didn’t cry. I just felt heaviness, like I was sinking into the pavement.

Two days later, I confronted Jack in our kitchen. He was making coffee, his back to me. I set a manila envelope on the counter. “Open it.”

He turned, saw the envelope, and his face went gray. He didn’t open it. He just stood there, the coffee machine hissing behind him. “Claire, I can explain—”

“Who is she?” My voice was steady, which surprised me.

“It doesn’t matter.” He ran a hand through his hair. “It was nothing. A mistake.”

“A mistake that lasted weeks. Months, probably.” I pulled out a photo: Jack at the apartment door, a woman with dark hair visible in the crack. He looked eager, like a teenager. I’d never seen that expression on his face when he looked at me. “You went straight there the minute I left for pottery class. Marcus said you were inside five minutes after I parked.”

The coffee machine beeped. He ignored it. “You set me up.”

“You set yourself up.” I put the photos back in the envelope. “I wanted to be wrong. I wanted to come home and find you waiting with takeout and a stupid apology. But you were just… predictable.”

He started to cry. I didn’t. I felt nothing but a cold, clear clarity. I took off my wedding ring—a simple band I’d worn for eight years—and placed it in the sugar bowl. Then I walked out the back door into the November fog, leaving him standing in the warm kitchen, the photos spread across the counter like playing cards.

The next week, I went back to pottery class. I didn’t need it anymore, but I found I liked the feeling of the wheel, the way clay could be shaped and reshaped. I made a crooked bowl. It wasn’t beautiful, but it was mine. And every time I look at it, I remember that the best traps are the ones you build with your own hands.
