For months I told myself I was imagining it. Marcus had grown quiet in a way that hummed under everything, the silence of a man rehearsing answers to questions I hadn't asked yet. His phone lived face-down. He drove extra rideshare shifts "for the holidays" that somehow never showed up in our shared budget. I am not a paranoid person. I am, it turns out, a person who was right.

That Thursday I left work early with a paper bag of his favorite dumplings and the naive intention of surprising him. The building's front door was propped open with a folded pizza box, which felt like an omen and a courtesy at once. I climbed the stairs without texting first. I think some part of me already knew that texting first was how people gave each other time to lie.

His door wasn't locked. The apartment smelled like cheap vanilla, a perfume I would never wear, and there was a coat on the floor that wasn't mine. I walked down the short hall the way you walk toward a sound at three in the morning, certain and terrified in equal measure.

I won't narrate what I saw. There was a girl, young, college-aged, and there was Marcus, and there was the long flat second where none of us said anything because there was nothing left to misunderstand. Then everyone moved at once. I threw her coat at his chest. I threw the dumplings, which I will never live down emotionally. He started talking fast, hands up, saying he'd met her on a fare that week, that it meant nothing, that I was overreacting to a stranger.

A stranger. As if that made it smaller.

I was already backing out of the room when something snagged in my mind, a loose thread I couldn't stop pulling. The coat on the floor by the front door had been one coat. But there had been two bags by the entry. Two scarves on the hook. Two of everything.

I turned and walked to the end of the hall, to his roommate Dev's room, and the handle didn't turn. Locked. From the inside, a startled rustle, then absolute, held-breath stillness.

That was when it assembled itself, cold and complete. Marcus hadn't picked up one passenger. He'd picked up two, the way you'd grab takeout for the apartment, and he and Dev had brought them both back like it was something they'd done before, something rehearsed. Dev's girlfriend was visiting her parents that weekend. They had timed it. They had coordinated it. While I was buying dumplings, they were splitting the night between two bedrooms.

I stood in that hallway between two closed doors, the last person in the building to understand what kind of place I'd been standing in. I had come to expose nothing. I'd only meant to surprise him. Instead I pulled one thread and watched a whole quiet machine fall apart, gears I'd never even known were turning.

I left the dumplings on the floor. Somehow that's the detail I think about most.
