Mango's New Word

The moment I walked through the door, Mango started screeching. Not her usual welcome—the cheerful wolf-whistle she'd learned from the plumber—but a frantic, almost jubilant squawk. "Hi, Chloe! Oh, Chloe!" She bobbed her crest, beak open, as if delighted by a secret I wasn't in on.

I dropped my duffel bag. "What's that, girl?" I laughed, assuming she'd picked up a phrase from a TV show or a delivery person. But my husband, Tom, froze in the kitchen doorway, a dish towel twisted in his hands. "She's been doing that all month," he said, too quickly. "Must have heard it on some commercial."

I let it go. I'd been away for five weeks, caring for my mother after her hip surgery. I was exhausted, craving normalcy. Mango was our rescue cockatoo, a smart, moody bird who'd learned to mimic the microwave, the doorbell, and my sneeze. A new phrase wasn't unusual. But as the evening wore on, I noticed a pattern. Every time Tom walked into the living room, Mango would fluff up and chant: "Hi, Chloe! Oh, Chloe!" She never said it when I entered alone.

At first, I brushed it off as coincidence. But by the third night, unease coiled in my stomach. Tom worked from home; I'd been gone a month. Who was Chloe? I didn't know any Chloe. His colleagues were Mark, Priya, Jason. His friends were Dave and Sarah. He never mentioned a Chloe. I told myself it was nothing—a neighbor's name, a character on his favorite podcast. But Mango's timing was too precise, the enthusiasm too specific.

One morning, when Tom left for a grocery run, I stood in front of Mango's cage. "Who's Chloe?" I asked softly. She tilted her head, then launched into a perfect imitation of my husband's voice: "Hey, Chloe! Come on in!" Followed by a lower, breathy laugh. I felt ice slide down my spine.

I started searching. First, his phone—but the call log was clean, messages deleted. Then his laptop. In the browsing history, I found a video saved from weeks ago: "How to reset a phone to factory settings." But what made me stop was the lipstick stain on the arm of the sofa—a shade I'd never worn, a glossy coral. I'd been vacuuming that spot before I left; it was pristine. Now it was smudged, as if someone had rested their arm there while leaning in.

I didn't confront him right away. I waited until the next evening, when he was relaxed, watching TV. Mango was perched on his shoulder, preening his ear. "Who's Chloe?" I asked, keeping my voice level.

He flinched. The bird squawked and flew to her cage. "What?"

"Mango says 'Hi, Chloe' every time you come in the room. She says it in your voice. Who is she?"

He stared at the floor. The silence stretched until I could hear the clock ticking in the kitchen. "She's... someone I met at the coffee shop," he said finally. "It was nothing. Just talking."

"Just talking doesn't leave lipstick on our sofa."

His face crumpled. He admitted it: a woman from the gym, Chloe, who'd come over during my absence. He swore it was only a few times, that he was lonely, that he was sorry. The words poured out like a script he'd rehearsed. I listened, numb. Mango watched us from her cage, head cocked, as if waiting for her cue.

After he finished, I looked at the bird. She had learned the name not from a commercial or a passerby, but from hearing my husband greet his lover on that very couch. Every time he strode in, the bird saw his excitement and mimicked it—faithfully, joyfully, betraying his secret long before I ever found the lipstick.

I didn't scream or cry. I just walked to the cage and said, "Good girl, Mango." She whistled back. I knew then that some truths are impossible to unsay. And some witnesses never forget the words you teach them.
