私たちを壊したホストのレビュー

The email arrived on a Tuesday afternoon, innocuous as a dead leaf skittering across the pavement. I was halfway through a report when my phone buzzed with the Airbnb notification: “You have a new review from your host, Margaret.” It was addressed to Alex, my boyfriend of three years, but sent to the shared email we used for his account—the one I’d helped him set up when he wanted to book a weekend for us last fall. I’d forgotten we’d left that link active.

I clicked the link out of idle curiosity. The page loaded slowly, and I imagined Margaret, a retiree with a penchant for lavender sachets, typing her kind words. But the review wasn’t about us. It read: “Alex and Sarah were wonderful guests—left the cabin spotless and even brought a bottle of wine. Would host them again anytime!”

My name is Emma. Not Sarah.

I stared at the screen until the words blurred. My fingers went cold. He’d taken a trip—a romantic cabin getaway—with someone named Sarah. The dates matched the “work retreat” he’d gone on two months ago, when he’d texted me photos of a conference room and complained about the terrible Wi-Fi. I’d made him a care package for the trip: his favorite granola bars, a new book, a note telling him I missed him.

I scrolled through the listing. The cabin had a hot tub, a fireplace, and a king-sized bed. Margaret’s other reviews mentioned “couples celebrating anniversaries” and “honeymooners.” My stomach turned.

I waited until he came home that evening. He kissed my cheek, smelling of coffee and the city, and asked about my day. I said nothing. I pulled up the review on my phone and held it out like a smoking gun.

“Who is Sarah?”

His face drained of color. He didn’t bother denying. He just looked at the floor and said, “I’m sorry.” He told me it had happened only once, that it was a mistake, that Sarah was a coworker who’d been going through a divorce and he’d wanted to be nice. Nice. He’d driven four hours to a secluded cabin, split a bottle of wine, and slept with her. And then he’d come home to me, smiling, pretending nothing happened.

I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I asked him to leave. He packed a bag in silence, and I watched his car reverse out of our driveway, the taillights bleeding into the rain.

That night, I sat alone in the apartment we’d shared for two years. The silence was loud, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator. I looked at the framed photo on the nightstand—us at the beach, arms wrapped around each other, smiling. I wondered if he’d thought of me when he was with her, if the cabin’s walls had echoed with her laughter while I was at home, trusting him, loving him.

The review stayed open on my laptop. Margaret’s kind words were a monument to his betrayal. I closed the browser, but the image of that cabin stayed with me—the crackling fire, the two glasses of wine, the bed he’d shared with a stranger.

In the weeks that followed, I’d sometimes check Airbnb for new reviews, half-expecting another one to appear, a digital ghost of a lie I couldn’t unsee. But there was nothing more. Just that one review, a gift from the universe, a truth I hadn’t asked for but couldn’t ignore. I realized then that sometimes the most devastating secrets are hidden in plain sight, in the spaces between a host’s gratitude and a lover’s deception.
