The lie wasn't in what he said. It was in how long the plane would be in the air.

Adrian told me about the trip on a Tuesday night, between bites of the pasta I'd made, in the offhand way people use when they've rehearsed something until it sounds careless. A few days away. Solo. He needed to clear his head, he said, and an old university friend had a place near the coast. Italy. He said the word lightly, like dropping a coin into a fountain.

I said that sounded lovely. I even meant it, mostly. We'd been together fourteen months, and I had learned that Adrian was a man who hummed when he was happy and went silent when he wasn't, and lately the silences had grown long enough to live inside. A solo trip, I told myself, might be good. Might bring back the version of him who used to text me from the grocery store about which olives I'd want.

But that night I lay awake with the strangest sensation, like a stone in my shoe I couldn't find. It wasn't jealousy, exactly. It was the precision of his vagueness. He'd told me the country and nothing else. No city. No friend's name. No photo of the place he was so excited about. When I'd asked, he'd kissed my forehead and changed the subject so smoothly it felt practiced.

In the morning, while he showered, his phone lit up on the nightstand with a boarding reminder. I wasn't snooping. I was reaching for my own charger. But I saw the flight number, and something in me, some quiet animal instinct, memorized it.

At work I couldn't concentrate. During lunch I pulled up a flight tracker and typed in the number, telling myself I just wanted to know when to wish him a safe landing. The route loaded. The duration sat there in plain gray text.

Ten hours.

I stared at it. Italy, from where we lived, was a short hop. Two and a half hours, three at the most. People did it for a weekend on a whim. Ten hours was not Italy. Ten hours was a different continent entirely. Ten hours was, I realized as my finger traced the little arc across the map, almost exactly the flight time to the country he'd grown up in. The country he'd left at nineteen. The country he never quite talked about, except for one name that had slipped out, once, drunk, a long time ago, and then been buried so quickly I'd assumed it was nothing.

Mara.

I told myself a hundred reasonable things. Layovers. A cheap connecting fare. A surprise for his parents. I built each excuse carefully and watched each one collapse, because there was no layover listed and his parents, he'd told me on our third date, had passed years ago.

So I did the thing I am not proud of. I went looking.

It didn't take long. Social media is a careless place, and people who think themselves anonymous rarely are. I found her through a tagged photo, a woman with a warm, unguarded smile, posting in a language I couldn't read but could translate with my phone. And there, three weeks old, was a caption that made the floor tilt under me. She was counting down the days. Her partner was finally coming home to visit. Eleven months they'd been apart. She'd posted a photo of the two of them from years ago, and the man in it, younger, sun-browned, laughing, was unmistakably Adrian.

Eleven months. We had been together for fourteen.

I sat in my office with the door closed and the lights off and felt the whole architecture of the last year rearrange itself. I had spent so much energy being afraid he might cheat on me with someone back home. It had never once occurred to me that I was the someone. That to her, I didn't exist, and to him, she was the one waiting, the real one, the home he flew ten hours to reach while telling me he just needed to clear his head by the sea.

I was not the woman he was betraying her with in his heart. I was the woman he was using to pass the time.

He came home that evening to find his suitcase by the door and the apartment very quiet. I had practiced a speech and forgotten all of it. In the end I just held up my phone, the flight time still on the screen, and watched his face do the thing faces do when they realize the story has ended without them.

He started to explain. It's not what it looks like. It's complicated. We're basically over, she and I.

"Ten hours," I said. "Italy is two and a half."

That was all. There was nothing else worth saying.

I messaged her that night, in her language, through a translator, plainly and without cruelty. She deserved a number that added up too. She wrote back one word, and even across the distance and the imperfect translation, I understood it completely.

He landed somewhere the next day. I don't know where, and I have finally stopped doing the math.
