The laptop chimed at one in the morning, and I almost didn't get up.

Marcus was asleep beside me, one arm flung over his eyes, breathing the slow even breath of a man with nothing on his conscience. The sound came from the kitchen table, where he'd left the machine open and glowing like a fish tank in the dark. I told myself I was only going to close the lid so the battery wouldn't drain. That was the whole plan. Close the lid, go back to bed.

But the screen woke when I touched it, and a chat window sat dead center, the cursor still blinking inside a half-typed sentence. A stranger's username hovered at the top. The messages beneath it were not the kind of thing you forget reading, even years later. He was asking this person — someone neither of us knew, someone who could have been anywhere on earth — to watch him. To stay on the line while he did things I had assumed, in my ordinary married naivety, were ours.

I stood there in the cold kitchen for a long time. The refrigerator hummed. Somewhere outside a car passed and threw a band of light across the ceiling. I kept thinking there had to be a version of this where it meant nothing, and I couldn't find it.

When I woke him, I didn't shout. I turned the laptop around so the screen faced him and waited.

He blinked at it. He rubbed his face. And then he said the thing that would define the next four years of my life: "That's not me. I think I got hacked."

Hacked. He'd left the laptop unattended in the campus library, he explained, fully awake now and gathering momentum, and some malicious stranger must have crawled into his accounts and started chatting in his name. He delivered it with the wounded sincerity of a man who genuinely expected gratitude for solving the mystery. As if I should be relieved.

I asked how a hacker knew his typing rhythm. How a hacker had logged in tonight, at home, while the real owner snored in the next room. He had answers for all of it, and the answers got more elaborate every time, branching and reinforcing themselves like a structure he was building specifically so he could live inside it.

The worst part is that I wanted to believe him. For a humiliating stretch of time I half did, because the alternative meant the man I'd married was a stranger wearing his face.

The hacker became a household ghost. Marcus blamed him for emails, for charges, for a second phone I found taped under a drawer. Each time, the phantom intruder had struck again. And I let it stand, because confronting the lie meant confronting everything behind it.

It took four years for the rest to surface — the accounts, the names, the scope of a secret life so much wider than one library chat. When it finally collapsed, he didn't even reach for the hacker anymore.

He just looked tired, the way a man looks when the story he's been carrying is finally too heavy to hold.
