I met him at a rooftop birthday party for a friend I barely see anymore, in that golden hour when everyone looks better than they are.

He was the most put-together man in the room — well-dressed, easy smile, the kind of confident eyes that find yours across a crowd and don't look away. We circled each other for an hour, both too proud to make the first move, until he finally crossed the floor and opened with a joke so cheesy I laughed out of sheer disbelief. But he was quick, and warm, and within twenty minutes he had me feeling like the only person up there. Before the party thinned out he asked for my number. I don't hand that out easily, so I gave him my social handle instead, which felt like the safer, slower door.

He came through it fast.

We started texting constantly — the kind of late-night conversations that fold time, where after four days it feels like four years. He suggested a casual first date, and because I work from home and was already climbing the walls, we met at one of my regular cafés. He was even better in person: funny, attentive, genuinely curious about me, talking openly about wanting something serious. He felt like the whole package, the rare one who'd actually read the assignment.

The second date was a movie, and afterward I ran a small, deliberate test. I asked if I could post a photo of us to my story. A man hiding something flinches at that. He didn't just agree — he reposted it to his own profile, tagged me, added a little caption. Public. Claimed. I remember thinking, *finally, a normal one.*

Then he went home to visit family in another city, and the temperature dropped overnight.

His replies, which used to land in minutes, started taking days. When he did surface, he'd overcorrect with these long, earnest paragraphs about how chaotic the house was, how many cousins were around, how he didn't have a single private corner to call me from. I chose to be generous. Family is family; not everyone can text back between relatives. I told myself I was being the understanding one.

But intuition doesn't care how understanding you're trying to be. Busy is one thing. Days of total silence is a *ranking* — it tells you exactly where you sit. He'd occasionally call me late, from a rooftop or a stairwell, voice low and romantic, just enough to keep the spell from breaking. And still, something cool and quiet had started to open up in the space between us.

He came back to the city, but it didn't warm up — now his parents were visiting, and he was "fully booked" playing tour guide. I kept being patient. I'm almost embarrassed by how patient I was.

Then came my birthday.

I didn't need a grand gesture. But from a man who'd talked so much about how much I mattered, I expected *something* — a plan, a small surprise, a reason to see me. What I got, at the stroke of midnight, was a single generic text. The kind you'd send a coworker. I sat with my phone in the dark and felt the last of the fantasy quietly deflate, because how someone shows up on the days that matter is the truest thing they'll ever tell you.

The full truth arrived a few hours later, on that same birthday.

A friend of a friend — Priya, someone I barely knew — had seen him on my stories weeks earlier. That afternoon she messaged me out of nowhere with a screenshot. It was his profile. Active. On a dating app. To be sure she wasn't wrong, she'd swiped right, matched with him, and started chatting — and he'd played it completely single, no girlfriend, no one special, not talking to anybody. All while I was waiting on a birthday plan that was never coming.

Something in me just went still. Not heartbreak, exactly — more like a light switching off. The "too good to be true" man was exactly that: a performance, run simultaneously for an audience of women who didn't know about each other.

We were never officially anything, so I didn't owe him a confrontation. I gave him the one thing his type can't stand: nothing. I stopped replying. Completely. I went quiet and stayed quiet.

He came apart at the silence. The man who couldn't find thirty seconds to call me on his family trip suddenly had endless time to blow up every app I had — calls, texts, voice notes, demanding to know what happened, what he'd done, why I'd "gone cold." When none of it moved me, he fired off one last wounded paragraph about how unfair I was being, then dramatically unfollowed me, as if that were a punishment.

It almost ended there. Almost.

I run a small second account where I post about relationship patterns — red flags, the games, the things we talk ourselves out of seeing. He was clearly still watching it, because he left a comment on one of my videos, convinced it was about him, saying we "needed to talk." Priya saw it before I did and stepped into the comments to call out the hypocrisy, plainly and without cruelty. That lit a fuse. A handful of his female friends descended to defend his honor, and a whole messy argument bloomed under a thirty-second video — while the man himself said absolutely nothing, just hovered there silently and let the women in his orbit fight it out on his behalf. Even then, no accountability. Not a word.

That silence told me everything I'd needed to know weeks earlier. I deleted the thread, blocked his number for good, and walked away from the illusion without looking back.

The lesson didn't cost me much, in the end, and I'm grateful for that. But it left a mark anyway: when a man feels too perfect too fast, the question isn't whether you're lucky. It's who else is getting the exact same lines.
