어둠 속에서 차가 본 것

주차장의 긁힌 자국 때문에 나는 영상을 찾아보게 되었다. 카메라는 전혀 다른 무언가를 녹화해 두었고, 나는 그것을 본 기억을 지울 수 없었다.

It started with a parking-lot ding. Nothing dramatic, just a fresh white crease above the rear wheel where someone had swung their door open in a crowded lot and never left a note. Marcus told me to pull the footage off the car so we could file with the insurance, and I sat in the driveway that Sunday afternoon with my laptop balanced on my knees, scrubbing through clips, looking for the careless stranger who'd dented my paint.

I never found that car. I found something else.

Our sedan keeps a kind of memory. When it's parked, the cameras watch the world around it, and any motion close enough wakes them up and writes a clip to the little drive in the glovebox. Most of what I scrolled past was boring: cats crossing the driveway, a delivery van, our neighbor wheeling out his trash. Then I hit a timestamp from two Fridays before. 1:47 a.m. The night Marcus had texted me he was crashing late at a friend's because the bar ran long and he'd had too many to drive.

The footage was grainy, washed in that ghostly green of night vision, but the streetlight by our curb made it clear enough. There was Marcus, unmistakable even drunk, weaving up the sidewalk with one arm slung around another man. I leaned in, half-smiling, ready to feel tender about my husband being too wasted to walk straight, about some good friend pouring him home safe.

The smile didn't last.

What the camera caught next wasn't a friend steadying a friend. It was something between them I had no name for in that moment, something physical and unguarded and obviously not the first time, the way you can tell when two people already know the shape of each other. The man finally folded Marcus into the back seat and stood there a moment in the green dark before walking off. The clip ended. The car went back to sleep, indifferent, having recorded the truth without asking my permission.

I sat in the driveway for a long time. The laptop fan whirred. A real cat crossed the real lawn. Inside the house I could hear Marcus laughing at something on the television, a sound I had loved for nine years and could no longer locate myself inside of.

He had names for everything in our marriage. He had explanations ready before I even finished a question, that easy confidence I'd always read as honesty. But the car didn't have explanations. It just had a timestamp and a streetlight and forty seconds that rearranged everything I thought I understood about the man I'd married, about the parts of himself he'd decided I was never allowed to see.

I didn't go inside right away. I watched it twice more, not for proof, I already believed it, but because some stubborn part of me kept waiting for a different ending. There wasn't one. There was only the dent I'd come out to investigate, still there above the wheel, suddenly the smallest broken thing in my life.
