The first thing I noticed was the angle of her phone.

For three years, Marisol had left her screen face-up on the kitchen counter, the coffee table, the arm of the couch. Texts came in and she'd read them without flinching, sometimes out loud, laughing at something her sister said. Then, sometime in late November, the phone started living face-down. When I walked into a room she would tilt it toward her chest, a small reflexive turn, like shielding a candle from a draft. Once I came back from the bathroom and watched her thumb fly across the screen, logging out of something, the little spinning wheel of a session ending.

I told myself it was nothing. People get private. People get tired.

But the closer it got to her flight home, the stranger she became. She was flying back to the coast to spend the holidays with her family, two weeks, and in the days before she left she turned into someone I didn't recognize. She picked fights about dishes. About the thermostat. About a tone she insisted I'd used that I genuinely hadn't. The morning I drove her to the airport she sat in the passenger seat radiating a heat I couldn't name, snapping at the radio, at the traffic, at me for taking the wrong exit even though it was the right one. At the curb she hugged me stiffly, like hugging a coat rack, and then she was gone through the sliding doors without looking back.

The first few days were quiet. Short replies. Slow ones.

Then came Christmas Eve. I went out for drinks with a couple of friends from our old group, women we'd both known for years, the kind of low-key evening I'd had a dozen times with her blessing. I sent her a photo of the table, the string lights, a stupid caption about missing her. Twenty minutes later my phone lit up with a wall of text.

She called me rude. Disrespectful. And then, out of nowhere, she wrote that I should just date them. Sleep with them. That clearly that was what I wanted, so why didn't I go ahead and do it.

I read it standing on the sidewalk in the cold, the bar noise leaking out behind me, and something in my chest went very still. Because there was no version of that night that earned those words. The accusation wasn't about me. It was a confession wearing the costume of an attack, the guilt inside her so heavy it had to spill onto someone, and I was simply the nearest surface.

I didn't fight back. I went home and I started paying attention.

It took less than two days to find it. A name. A history. The face-down phone finally explained. She had been doing, two thousand miles away, exactly the thing she'd accused me of, and she'd needed me to be the villain so badly that she'd handed me the whole truth gift-wrapped on Christmas Eve.

When she flew back, I was the one waiting at the curb. I didn't get out of the car.
