I knew something was wrong before I knew anything at all. There were too many lights for our quiet street, red ones, swinging slow circles across the brick of our building like a warning I couldn't read yet.

I'd left the depot two hours early. A burst pipe had flooded the loading dock, and the supervisor sent half of us home for the night. I remember being almost happy about it on the drive back. I'd texted Mara from the parking lot. *Home early. Want me to grab wine?* She hadn't answered, and I'd assumed she was in the shower.

The ambulance was parked across two spots, doors flung open. A small crowd of neighbors stood on the sidewalk in their slippers, doing that thing people do, looking and pretending not to look. I took the stairs because the elevator felt too slow, and the closer I got to our floor the stronger the smell became. Garlic. Roasted something. The dinner smell of a normal Tuesday, except nothing about this was normal.

Our door was open. A paramedic was crouched in the hallway writing on a clipboard, and behind him, in the kitchen, was Mara. She was wearing her green bathrobe, the one she only wore late at night, and she was crying so hard her whole body shook. When she saw me her face did something I have never been able to forget. It wasn't relief. It was horror.

"Sir, you can't go in there," the paramedic said, but I was already past him.

There was a man on our bed.

He was a stranger. I had never seen him before in my life, and he was not moving, and the way the second paramedic had stopped working on him told me everything. His clothes were folded over the chair by the window. The chair I hung my shirts on. There were two wine glasses on the nightstand and two plates on the dresser, one of them barely touched.

I learned the rest in pieces over the worst hour of my life, standing in my own kitchen while strangers asked me questions I had no answers for. His name was Daniel. He had a severe allergy, the kind that came with an emergency pen he hadn't brought with him. Mara had cooked. She had wanted to impress him, she would tell me later, in a voice I didn't recognize. She used an ingredient she didn't know about, a paste in the sauce, something exotic she'd bought to make the evening special.

He'd eaten. They'd gone to the bedroom. And somewhere in there, in my home, in my bed, he had stopped being able to breathe.

I keep thinking about the text I sent from the parking lot. *Home early.* How she must have stared at it. How that ordinary little message arrived in the middle of a catastrophe she was already drowning in.

I didn't shout. I didn't break anything. I just stood there understanding, all at once, that every version of my life I had imagined was over. She had betrayed me, and the universe had exposed it in the only way that left no room for explanation, no rewriting, no second wine bottle to soften it.

I packed a bag that night and slept in my truck. The smell of garlic followed me for days.
