The album was Daniel's idea, and I remember thinking at the time how sweet it was.

We'd just come back from a week at the coast with his parents and his sister's family, and there were hundreds of photos scattered across everyone's phones. So Daniel set up a shared album, the kind where anyone you invite can drop in their pictures and everyone sees them. He called it "Family Coast 2025" and added his mother, his sister Erin, his brother Paul, and me. For a few weeks it was lovely. Grainy sunset shots, the kids buried in sand, Daniel's mother laughing at something off-camera. I'd open it on quiet evenings and scroll through, feeling like we had something good.

Daniel traveled a lot for work. He managed accounts for a logistics firm two hours away, which meant two or three nights a week in hotels, sometimes more. I never questioned it. He'd been doing it for years, and he always called before bed, always sounded tired in the ordinary way of a man who'd sat in meetings all day. If anything, I felt lucky. My friends complained about husbands glued to the couch. Mine was out building a life for us.

The first wrong note was so small I nearly missed it. One night he called and I could hear a woman's voice in the background, light and unhurried, the way you only sound around someone you're comfortable with. He said it was the TV. The next week his phone, which had always lived face-up on the kitchen counter, started living face-down. I told myself I was inventing things. I was tired. The kids were a lot. Marriages have dry seasons.

Then came the Sunday.

I was making coffee, phone propped against the fruit bowl, when a notification slid down the screen. New photo added to "Family Coast 2025." I assumed it was Erin posting something she'd found. I tapped it without thinking.

It was Daniel. Asleep. Bare-shouldered in a bed that was not our bed, in a room I had never seen, morning light falling across sheets the wrong color. The angle was intimate, taken from beside him by someone lying close. For a moment my brain simply refused it, the way you refuse a word in a language you don't speak. Then it arrived all at once, and I had to put the cup down because my hand wasn't steady.

The photo sat there in our family album. The same album his mother checked. The same album his sister opened to show her children pictures of the beach.

I understood, dimly, what must have happened. Whoever she was, she'd had access to one of his devices, and when she went to save that picture somewhere private, she'd tapped the wrong destination. One careless thumb had broadcast the truth to all of us at once. I almost laughed, a horrible sound that came out wrong.

It was gone within ninety seconds. Deleted. He must have seen the same notification and lunged for his phone wherever he was. But the album keeps a record, and besides, I had already screenshotted it, my fingers moving before my mind had decided anything.

His mother texted the group chat twenty minutes later. "Did something just post to the album? It vanished." Erin replied with a question mark. Daniel went silent for the rest of the day, which told me everything. When a man has nothing to hide, he answers.

He came home that evening with flowers, which I hadn't seen in years, and that was almost the cruelest part. He stood in the doorway and started to explain about a "glitch," about photos syncing strangely between devices, and I let him talk for a while because I wanted to see how far he'd go. He went very far.

I waited until he ran out of words. Then I turned my phone around and showed him the screenshot.

I won't describe his face. It's the one thing from that whole year I'd rather not keep.

What I keep instead is this: he built that album so we could all share the good parts of our life. He could not have known he was building the thing that would tell on him. There's a strange mercy in it, I've decided. I might have spent years not knowing. Instead the truth arrived the way truth sometimes does, plainly, in the morning light, in a room I'll never see, where someone else was lying close enough to take the picture.
