Conflict Styles in Relationships

People often protect themselves in conflict by pursuing, withdrawing, pleasing, competing, or problem-solving.

Notice the pattern, then slow it down

Conflict styles are learned strategies, not permanent identities. One person may seek immediate answers while another needs time to think. Neither pattern is automatically wrong, but the combination can become painful when it repeats without repair.

Name what is happening in neutral terms: “I am getting louder because I am scared,” or “I am shutting down and need a short pause.” Curiosity creates more options than winning.

Frequently asked questions

Can conflict styles change?
