陷在米勒巷泥里的那辆车

午夜,走在空无一人的乡间小路上。一辆车陷进泥里,没到了车轴。他上前去帮忙。他本该继续往前走。

以下完整故事为英文。

I have walked Miller's Lane almost every night for eleven years. It is the kind of road the county forgot to pave, two muddy ruts running between hedgerows, and at night it belongs only to the owls and to me. I go out there when my head is too loud to sleep. The dark is total. No streetlamps, no houses, just the smell of wet earth and the crunch of my boots in the gravel. I never expected to meet a soul.

That night the moon was thin and the rain had stopped only an hour before, leaving the lane soft as pudding. I came around the bend by the old gate and stopped. There was a car. A dark sedan, sunk to its sills in the mud, tilted at an angle like a boat run aground. The engine was off. No lights.

My first thought was that someone had skidded off and gotten stuck. It happens out there. I had pulled two cars out of that exact patch myself. So I did what any decent person does. I walked toward it to offer a tow, already reaching for the phone in my pocket to call my truck.

Then I heard it. Muffled, frantic sounds from inside. For one cold second I thought someone was hurt, trapped, screaming for help. I broke into a jog. I came up on the passenger side, cupped my hands to the fogged glass, and leaned in close.

It took my brain a long, awful moment to understand what I was looking at. There was no accident. There was no one in distress. There were two people inside, tangled together in a way that made my stomach drop straight through the muddy ground. I jerked back. They had seen my face appear in the window like something out of a nightmare, and both of them started screaming, a panicked, animal sound.

The man I did not know. The woman, when she turned and the dim glow caught her face, when her eyes locked onto mine through the smeared glass, I knew instantly.

It was Dana. My best friend's wife. Marcus's wife. The woman who had sat at my kitchen table a hundred times, who had hugged me at his father's funeral, who teased me about being single. The woman married to the man I considered a brother.

She saw me see her. I watched the recognition hit her like a slap, and her face simply broke. She put both hands over her mouth and burst into a kind of crying I have never heard before or since, ugly and hysterical, the sound of an entire life collapsing in real time. She had driven out to the one road on earth she was sure no human being would ever travel, and the one human who walked it every single night had appeared at her window.

I turned and walked away. I did not run. I just walked back into the dark, my legs strange and far away, the screaming and the sobbing fading behind me.

I did not sleep that night, or the next. I knew what I had to do, and I knew it would cost me my oldest friend either way. Marcus deserved the truth. Telling him remains the hardest thing I have ever done.

I still walk Miller's Lane. But now, when I come around that bend, I always slow down.
