知道得太多的那条评论

睡前刷着本地失踪人口帖子的一个女人,出于无聊点开了一个陌生人的主页。那个用户名属于一个小时前还被她吻别道晚安的人。

以下完整故事为英文。

It was almost midnight when I found him, and I hadn't been looking. That's the part that still hollows me out. I wasn't snooping, wasn't suspicious, wasn't doing any of the things a wife is supposed to do before her whole life caves in. I was just scrolling.

There was a missing-person thread for our county that everybody had been sharing — a college kid who'd walked out of a gas station off Route 9 and never come home. I'd read it three nights running, the way you do, hoping the next refresh would bring good news. The comments were mostly the same: prayers, vague sightings, people who knew people who knew the family.

Then I saw one that was too specific. It named the back trails behind the reservoir, the gap in the fence by the water authority road, the exact kind of detail only a local who'd been out there himself would know. Idle curiosity, nothing more. I tapped the username to see if it was someone from town I might recognize.

I recognized him.

The display name was a string of numbers and a word I'd never have connected to him in a thousand years. But the profile was a confession told in pictures. Photos of a body I'd fallen asleep against for nine years. Photos with no face, because of course there was no face — that was the whole architecture of it. Messages, public and proud, propositioning women within a fifteen-mile radius of the house we'd painted together the spring we got married.

I sat very still. Down the hall the bedroom light was off. He'd kissed my forehead an hour earlier, said he was beat, said he loved me in the automatic way that had always sounded like a heartbeat and now sounded like a recording. The dog shifted at my feet. The refrigerator hummed. My own pulse was the loudest thing in the room.

I scrolled for an hour without breathing right. There were dates on the posts. There were our anniversaries threaded between them. There was a night I remembered specifically — I'd had the flu, he'd brought me ginger ale and crackers and told me to rest — and he'd posted forty minutes after handing me that glass.

I didn't scream. I didn't wake him. I went to the kitchen and made tea I didn't drink and watched the steam curl up and disappear and thought, with a calm that scared me more than rage would have: I have been married to a stranger who happened to do a good impression of my husband.

In the morning I didn't ambush him. I slid my phone across the table, open to the profile, and watched the color leave his face in real time. He didn't ask how I'd found it. He asked who else had seen it. That answer told me everything the photos hadn't.

People keep saying I was unlucky — what are the odds, that one thread, that one comment. But I've stopped seeing it that way. Somewhere out there a family is still waiting for a kid to come home, and their grief, of all things, is what handed me the truth. I'd been living inside a lie so seamless I might have died believing it.

Instead a stranger's comment knew too much about the woods. And so, finally, did I.
