认识他名字的那家礼品店

我在男友一直关注的那家小店给他订了份惊喜礼物。店主看到他的名字后,变得非常、非常安静。

以下完整故事为英文。

It started with a heart-shaped notification on a Tuesday night, and I want you to understand that I smiled when I saw it.

Arjun had followed a tiny boutique on Instagram. The kind that makes one thing beautifully and slowly, pressed flowers sealed in resin, hand-lettered notes, little wooden boxes that smell of cedar when you open them. He never followed pages like that. He follows cricket accounts and a man who reviews instant noodles. So when his name popped up in their followers list, my whole chest went warm. My birthday was three weeks away. He's terrible at surprises, the kind of man who hides a gift and then asks if you've looked in the bottom drawer, and I thought, this time he's actually trying.

I decided to match him. That was the whole, stupid, tender plan. If he was quietly planning something soft for me, I'd do the same for him. I messaged the shop myself, late, in my pajamas, the blue light of my phone the only thing awake in the flat. I told the owner I wanted something custom for my partner. I gave her dates, a few details, the way he takes his coffee, the song from our first trip. And, because she asked who the gift was for, I gave her his name.

The typing dots appeared. Then stopped. Then appeared again. For almost a full minute, nothing.

When she finally wrote back, her tone had changed completely. Careful. The way you'd speak to someone standing at the edge of something. She asked, very gently, if I was sure I wanted to go ahead. She said his name had come through her shop already, recently. A large order. She didn't want to be the one to say it, but she didn't think she could take my money in good conscience.

I sat very still on the kitchen floor.

She told me she had made him something three weeks earlier. Something expensive, romantic, the centerpiece of her whole collection. It had shipped to an address that wasn't mine, to a woman whose name I didn't know, with a handwritten note he'd dictated to her himself. She still had the wording saved. She offered to send me a photo of the order, and God help me, I said yes.

Then she told me the part that undid me. She'd already known something was wrong. When the second woman's address didn't match the profile he'd tagged, she'd messaged him privately and given him a choice, tell the person he was building a life with, or she would. She'd given him days. He had said all the right things and done absolutely nothing.

So she did it for him. A stranger who sells pressed flowers became the most honest person in my life that month.

I never placed my order. I closed the chat, set the phone face down, and sat there listening to the fridge hum until morning. The cruelest detail isn't the other woman. It's that I followed his footsteps straight into the truth, convinced the entire walk that he was leading me somewhere kind.
