早间节目上的坦白

我给丈夫报名了电台的整蛊电话。他接起电话,在直播中坦白了自己的婚外情。

以下完整故事为英文。

I had been listening to “The Max & Maggie Morning Show” for years. It was my guilty pleasure, the soundtrack to my commute and my morning coffee. Max’s prank calls were legendary—harmless fun, usually catching a friend exaggerating their weekend plans or a husband pretending he was at the gym when he was really at a bar. I never thought my own life would become the punchline.

It started as a joke. I submitted Mark’s name and phone number to the show’s “Dirty Friday” segment, thinking it would be hilarious when they called him. I imagined him laughing nervously, playing along, maybe admitting he’d rather be golfing than at my sister’s baby shower. I never imagined this.

That Friday morning, I was in the kitchen, pouring a second cup of coffee, the radio on low. Max’s voice crackled through the speaker: “Alright, folks, time for Dirty Friday. We’re calling Mark, whose wife, Sarah, submitted him. Let’s see what he’s really up to.” I smiled, wiping a crumb from the counter. The phone rang. And rang. Then a groggy voice: “Hello?”

“Hi, Mark, this is Frank from the Grand Regency Hotel. I’m calling to confirm your reservation for the romantic suite this evening—the one with the rose petals and champagne? Just need to verify the name on the booking.”

There was a pause. My smile faded. Mark wasn’t confused. He didn’t say “wrong number.” Instead, his voice dropped to a whisper: “Uh, yeah, that’s right. But—look, keep it quiet, okay? My wife can’t know. I’m still bringing my… girlfriend tonight.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. The coffee cup slipped from my fingers, shattering on the tile. Max and Maggie were silent for a second, then burst into awkward laughter. I stood frozen, my ears ringing. He wasn’t playing along. He was confessing. A girlfriend. A romantic suite. Tonight.

I don’t remember driving to the station. I just showed up, face tear-streaked, and demanded to see the producer. They gave me Mark’s phone number and a private room. I called him. He answered cheerfully: “Hey, babe, what’s up?”

“I heard,” I said. My voice was flat, foreign.

“Heard what?”

“That you have a girlfriend. That you’re taking her to the Grand Regency tonight.”

Silence. Then: “Wait, how did you—”

“You were on the radio, Mark. The prank call I submitted? It was supposed to be fun. Instead, you told the whole city you’re cheating on me.”

His defense came in stammers: “That was a joke, I was just messing around, I didn’t know it was real—” But I knew. I knew from the panic in his voice, from the way he had lowered it when he mentioned his wife. That was real. That was him.

I hung up. The producer offered me a seat, but I couldn’t stay. I drove home, every stoplight a fresh wave of nausea. Our house looked the same—the mailbox, the potted plant on the porch—but nothing was. I walked into the kitchen, still smelling the spilled coffee, and picked up a shard of the broken mug. It was a gift from his mother. I held it until my palm bled.

He came home late that night, after the show had replayed the segment online a hundred times. He tried to apologize, to explain. But I just looked at him, the man I’d married five years ago, and saw a stranger. The radio static still hummed in my ears, a constant reminder that the truth, when it finally comes, doesn’t always knock. Sometimes it’s broadcast live to a city of listeners, and all you can do is listen.
