那场永远停不下来的台球游戏

丈夫和同事玩一款无聊的手机台球游戏,根本停不下来。我想不通一个大男人怎么会这么着迷,直到我读懂了回合之间的暗示。

以下完整故事为英文。

The first thing I noticed was the sound. That little electronic click-clack, the soft pop of digital balls scattering across a green felt screen. Daniel made it dozens of times a night, thumbs moving in the blue light of the couch, his face lit up like a kid.

"It's just pool," he said, when I finally asked. "Marcus and I got into it at work. We've got like a forty-game streak going."

A forty-game streak. Of a free pool game built into our phones, the kind of thing you play once in an airport and forget exists. I laughed it off at the time. Better than poker, I figured. Better than the gym buddies who never stopped talking about protein. If my forty-one-year-old husband wanted to sink imaginary stripes against a coworker named Marcus, who was I to ruin his fun?

But it kept growing. The game followed him everywhere. To the bathroom. To bed, where he'd angle the screen away and tap, tap, tap until I drifted off. On Sunday mornings he'd check it before he checked the coffee. And every single time, the same explanation, delivered a little too smoothly: "Marcus took his shot. Gotta take mine."

What started to bother me wasn't the game. It was his face. Pool doesn't make a person flush like that. Pool doesn't make you lock your phone the second your wife leans over the armrest. One night he fell asleep on the couch, the phone resting open on his chest, the screen still glowing with that cheerful green table.

I told myself I was just going to close the app so it wouldn't drain his battery. That was the lie I needed to pick it up.

The game was real. The turns were real. "Your move!" the little notifications announced, stacked one after another down the thread like a tidy paper trail. An alibi printed in a friendly font. But notifications aren't conversation, and a man doesn't blush at a notification.

So I scrolled past them. Slowly. And in the gaps between the automated turn alerts, in the seams of that innocent little game, were the messages he'd thought he had deleted. The ones the game's chatter was designed to bury. They were not from a coworker named Marcus. They were not about pool.

I read enough to understand the architecture of it. The game wasn't a hobby. It was camouflage. Every "Your turn!" gave him an excuse to open the thread in front of me, to surface whatever fresh thing had been sent, to answer it, and to scrub the evidence before the next break shot. He'd been hiding an affair inside a children's pool game, and I'd been sitting eighteen inches away applauding his dedication.

He stirred. I set the phone back on his chest, exactly where it had been, screen up, green felt glowing. I watched him sleep for a long minute.

Then I quietly went and packed a bag, because for the first time in months I knew exactly whose turn it was.
