酒吧里那个也认识她的陌生人

两杯啤酒间与陌生人的轻松闲聊,竟变成那种还没喝完就让你失去一段友情的坦白。

以下完整故事为英文。

The thing about a quiet Tuesday at a neighborhood bar is that you let your guard down. There's no music loud enough to hide behind, no crowd to disappear into. Just a row of stools, a tired bartender, and whoever happens to be sitting two seats away.

His name was Theo. We got to talking the way strangers do when there's a game on the corner television and neither of you cares who wins. He bought a round. I bought the next. By the second beer we'd done the usual map of a small life, where do you work, where'd you grow up, and somewhere in there we landed on people we might both know.

I mentioned Marisol. Not for any reason, really, just that she'd grown up a few streets over from where Theo said he lived. His face did something then, a small private smile, like a man remembering a good weekend.

"Oh, Marisol," he said, and the way he leaned on her name made my stomach tighten before my brain caught up. "Yeah. We see each other. Casual thing. Friends with benefits, you know how it is."

I set my beer down very carefully, the way you set down something you're afraid you might throw.

"How casual?" I asked.

He shrugged, easy, oblivious. "Couple times a month. She comes by, we hang out, she leaves before morning. No strings. It's perfect, honestly."

I should explain. Marisol was my best friend's girlfriend. Daniel and I had known each other since we were boys throwing a ball against a brick wall. He'd been with her almost two years. Three weeks earlier he'd shown me a ring in a velvet box, his hands actually shaking, asking if I thought spring or fall would be better for a wedding.

I didn't say any of that out loud at first. I just looked at this stranger, this perfectly pleasant man who'd bought me a beer, and felt the floor of an ordinary evening fall out from under me.

"She's seeing someone," I said finally. My voice came out flat. "A guy named Daniel. They've been together two years. He's about to propose."

For a second Theo didn't react. Then it registered, and his whole expression changed, the smile collapsing into something cornered and small. He glanced at the door like he was measuring the distance to it.

He laughed, but there was no humor in it. He rubbed the back of his neck, and when he finally spoke, he wouldn't meet my eyes.

"I hope," he said quietly, "you're not good enough friends with him to have to tell him."

We weren't strangers anymore. We were two men holding the same ugly secret, and only one of us had earned it.

I left my beer half-full on the bar. Outside, the night was cold and very clear, and Daniel's number was already glowing on my screen before I'd decided what I was going to say. Some friendships ask you to lie. Mine, I knew right then, was about to ask me to do the harder thing.
