我设下的考验,我自己踏入的陷阱

我建了一个假账号,想证明男友的忠诚。他用一句诚实的话,以最糟糕的方式通过了考验。

以下完整故事为英文。

The plan felt clever right up until it ruined my life.

For about four months, something between Daniel and me had been quietly going wrong, and I couldn't name it. Nothing you could point to. He still kissed me goodbye in the mornings. He still texted me to ask if we needed milk. But he had started turning his phone face-down on the table, a small thing, the kind of thing you notice and then talk yourself out of noticing. He laughed at his screen at ten at night and, when I asked what was funny, said "just a work thing" without looking up.

I am not a paranoid person. Or I didn't used to be. But I had begun lying awake next to him, listening to him breathe, doing the math on all the late evenings at the office and the gym bag that never seemed to need washing anymore. I would build a case in my head and then dismantle it by morning, ashamed of myself. He had never given me a real reason. We had been together two years. We had a shared calendar and a cat named Olive and a tentative plan to look at apartments in the spring.

So I did the stupidest thing I have ever done. I told myself it was the smart thing.

I made a fake Instagram account. I borrowed photos from a model with a few thousand followers, someone glossy and unthreatening, the kind of woman who could plausibly drift into a stranger's messages. I gave her a name, Mia, and a vague bio about travel and oat lattes. I followed a handful of accounts so she wouldn't look brand new. Then, late on a Thursday while Daniel slept upstairs, I had "Mia" message him.

I'm not proud of what she said. I made her flirt. I made her bold, the kind of bold I never am in real life. I told myself the whole point was to give him every possible exit, to make it as easy as I could for him to fail, so that when he didn't fail I could finally exhale and forgive myself for ever doubting him. I wanted him to pass. I swear I wanted him to pass.

He didn't take the bait. That was the thing. For two days "Mia" pushed and he stayed polite and distant, deflecting, never quite engaging. My heart actually lifted. I lay on the couch with my phone glowing in my hands and felt the four months of suspicion start to drain out of me like a fever breaking. He was loyal. I had invented a monster out of a face-down phone.

I should have stopped there. But I wanted the full confirmation, the gold star, so "Mia" asked him outright why he wasn't interested. I wanted him to type *I have a girlfriend.* I wanted him to type *I'm in love with someone.* I wanted his loyalty in writing so I could keep it forever.

He wrote back fast. I can still see the gray bubble appearing.

"Sorry, you seem great, but I'm already seeing someone at my work and it's getting pretty serious. I don't want the complication."

I read it maybe nine times. *Already.* *Serious.* *Complication.* The word that gutted me was "complication," because it meant I was a person he was managing, a logistics problem, a thing to be kept from finding out. He hadn't resisted Mia out of love for me. He'd resisted her because he already had his hands full with someone real.

I didn't sleep. The next morning I made coffee and watched him eat toast and scroll his face-down phone, and I felt like I was looking at him through glass. It took me three days to find out who she was. A woman from his department named Priya. They'd been "working late" together since around February, which was, of course, exactly when the phone started turning over.

When I finally told him what I'd done and what he'd written, he didn't even bother denying the affair. He was angrier about the fake account than about being caught. "You catfished me," he kept saying, as if that were the crime that mattered, as if I were the one who'd betrayed us.

Maybe I did cross a line. I think about that. But I've made peace with it, mostly. I built a trap to catch a lie I prayed didn't exist, and instead I caught the truth, which is worse and better and finally mine to keep.

I deleted the account that afternoon. I kept the screenshots.
