The candle flickered between us, casting shadows that danced across Elena’s face as she laughed at something I’d said. It was our two-year anniversary, and I’d chosen Il Forno because the tiramisu was her favorite. She looked beautiful in that red dress, the one she’d worn on our first date. I almost forgot about my dead Apple Watch strapped to her wrist—a compromise we’d made after I complained about missing my step goal.

‘I’ll be right back,’ she said, dabbing her lips with the napkin. ‘Don’t eat my breadsticks.’

I smiled and watched her weave through the tables toward the restroom. A few minutes later, a buzz against my skin—her watch on my wrist. I glanced down. A notification slid across the screen: ‘Can’t stop thinking about this morning. You’re incredible.’ The name above was Dan.

Dan. Her coworker. The one she’d mentioned in passing, the one who’d helped her with a project. My hand trembled as I touched the screen. It unlocked—no passcode, just a swipe. And there they were: months of messages, a digital tapestry of betrayal. ‘The breakroom at noon?’ ‘I love the way you say my name.’ ‘Wish you were here instead of dinner with him.’ Each word felt like a knife.

I scrolled, my heart hammering against my ribs. The air in the restaurant grew thick, the clatter of dishes muted. I saw dates that matched late nights at the office, weekend ‘errands.’ Photos exchanged—innocent at first glance, but the context turned them toxic. A selfie of her in the dress she was wearing now, sent to him before we left. ‘Wish this was for you.’

When Elena returned, sliding into her seat with a smile, I couldn’t speak. She reached for her wine glass. ‘Everything okay?’ she asked, her eyes searching mine.

‘What’s this?’ I held up my wrist, the watch face toward her.

She paled. ‘Mark, I can explain—’

‘Explain what?’ My voice cracked. ‘That you’ve been sleeping with Dan? That while I was planning this dinner, you were sending him pictures?’

Tears welled in her eyes. ‘It didn’t mean anything. It was just—’

‘Just what? Physical? Emotional? Help me out here, Elena, because I’m trying to understand how two years gets thrown away for a breakroom affair.’

She reached for my hand; I pulled away. ‘I’m sorry. I was going to tell you. I was weak.’

‘Weak?’ I laughed, bitter and hollow. ‘You didn’t seem weak in those messages. You seemed eager.’

The couple at the next table glanced over. I didn’t care. ‘I think I need to leave.’

I stood, unfastening the watch and placing it on the table. The metal clicked against the wood. She sobbed quietly, but I felt nothing—just a numbing cold spreading through my chest. I walked out into the night, the cool air hitting my face. The city lights blurred as I realized the woman I loved had never been mine at all.

I didn’t look back. The watch stayed on the table, a silent monument to everything we’d lost.
