일요일 신문에 실린 결혼 공고

커피를 홀짝이며 생활면을 훑어보던 그녀는 결혼사진이 가득한 지면을 넘기다 신랑의 얼굴을 알아보았다.

Sundays were ours, or so I told myself.

That was the rule I'd built our whole relationship around. Five months of slow mornings, of him appearing at my door with bagels and that crooked grin, of evenings folded together on the couch. Marcus had a way of making the ordinary feel chosen. When he disappeared for the occasional weekend, the explanations were always so flat and reasonable I never thought to doubt them. A cousin's move across the state. A work retreat with no signal. His mother's plumbing. I believed every dull word because the dull words are the ones you never question.

The morning it ended, nothing announced itself. Rain ticked against the kitchen window. I had coffee going, the good mug, and the fat Sunday paper spread across the table the way I liked it, ink smudging my fingers. I drifted past the headlines toward the lifestyle section out of pure habit, the engagement and anniversary pages I usually skimmed for the dresses.

I turned the page and the world simply stopped.

It was a full spread. Professional. A bride mid-laugh in ivory lace, and beside her, one hand resting at the small of her back in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, was Marcus. My Marcus. The same jaw I'd kissed two nights earlier. The same eyes. Smiling at a camera, at a future, at a woman I had never seen in my life. The caption thanked their families. It named the church. It listed the date, and the date was three weeks gone.

I read it four times. My coffee went cold while I tried to make the letters rearrange into something survivable. They wouldn't. He hadn't merely been seeing someone else on those quiet weekends. He had planned a wedding. Booked a venue, fitted a tux, stood at an altar, said the words. He had let a photographer capture it and a newspaper print it for the entire town to read over breakfast, mine included, while he texted me good night and asked what I wanted to do next Sunday.

The audacity of it was almost the worst part. Not the hiding, but the publishing. He'd been so confident our worlds would never touch that he let his marriage become public record.

I didn't cry, not then. I sat very still and felt something hard and clarifying settle over me, like the rain finally easing. I cut the page out neatly, folded it once, and set it by the door where he'd see it when he arrived with the bagels he never got to hand me.

He showed up at noon. I watched through the window as he read it on the step, his shoulders dropping. I didn't open the door. There was nothing left in the house worth saying. The Sunday paper had said all of it, in print, where everyone could see.
